Hi all. I just discovered this forum after googling Stars on a whim. I played this game quite a bit back on the old Win 3.11 on my (ye gods how time flies) 486sx.

It's a great game, and frankly, I'm kind of shocked that people still play it. Who knew? Guess that's a good testament to it's quality. I've checked out some of the links, and I'm planning on remembering how to play this thing. My current recollections recall that the game is played with a mouse, that you click on things a lot, and there are lots of colored circles and a planet named Stove Top Very Happy

So, it seems there are a few recent posts. Are things still active? Do you guys welcome rank beginners? I have a registered copy, and lots of goodies. Where do I start?

Hello - yes game still going strong.
The community has dropped in numbers a bit in the going on 5 years I have been hanging about. I think there is less than 500 of us (but others will know better).

We do get a few new players (from posts it looks like a couple a month) and rank beginners are definately welcomed.

You will also find a lot of support in the community - people will start telling you, you need "25Kby2450" (and more usefully pointing you in the direction of links to tutorials that help you do this http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=253 1&start=0&rid=256&S=dace753eb47d4480b8411a5279a6 f099 )

I love the game and play it in preference to much wizzier graphic heavy games (like Rome TW which I also love) because it is just so well balanced (unlike RTW for example which in online play if you play Romans you are significantly more likely to win than any other nation)

We have also recently seen a trend for "Help Newbs get started" games (I think there are a number of us who are concerned that in another 5 years we wont have many people left to play).

The one thing about Stars is that it IS what it IS. Most everything has been investigated so thouroughly that everybody plays observing the banned glitches / cheats. Everything is documented and can be found in this forum.

P.S. if you don't have a copy of the game, you can download the last valid shareware version of the game and re-learn it by playing the tutorial. You CAN run this game with Windows XP - no problem.

If you don't have your original serial number, you can get a serial number for a very small donation to Ron (the administrator of this site) and he can generate a serial number for you. A few players in this community do have extra serial numbers available if necessary for short term use.
