But, since it'll take a significant chunk of my free time, I'd like to avoid the bane of big games as much as possible, i.e. dropouts.
Team Games tend to cover for absent players better. Also, anyone mad enough to tackle a "no-friends" game in a big galaxy should be tough enough to keep playing until the bitter end, or at least find a replacement.
Alas, there's no certainty. How many diehards can we round up for a year-plus epic war in a decently vast scenario?

If you are looking for a game in a few months, I may start Glacier II.
I plan on starting a public thread near the end of the current game, to get a few opinions on what can/should be changed, but so far it has been a very fun game. Long wars, and turns are very easy to manage.

I reckon I'd gave a large/huge game a go. But dropouts I think would be likely to be a deciding factor of the game. Perhaps 2 person teams would deal with that, as if one wimped out, perhaps the other might have the decency to keep going until the races are irrelevant (as opposed to merely being unable to win, there's a big difference.)

So I heard!

Well, good! Glad to get roundabout feed back.

I don't think that larger would necessarily be better. It might add a few years to the game, but most of those years would be from people not attacking each other. I thought about making a map that has bubbles of planets, in row pattern of 3x3 or 4x4, using a large sparse.
Another idea was use a flower shape, with the petals being tear drops around a circle bubble in the center. The center bubble containing 2-3x the planets of the petal shapes. Each player gets a petal, and the center is void of players.
It would be nice to have a wrap a round map, though. So no one gets a corner.

I didn't limit warp, so most of us are already using warp9 scoops. That is another possibility, tho, at limiting expansion.

Looks like it's plausible in several of the (still in development) stars cloning projects, like Freestars.
In Stars! itself, I think the closet we can come so far is placing permanent wormholes on the edges to link them. I suppose putting down three wormholes in each corner to link every corner with every other corner (six sets) would make for a quite interesting geographical feature for a game.
