Greetings, all.

First post -it's grand to see that Stars! still has a following after all these years, despite GalCiv II and Space Empires V et al (the latter I actually like, with the *essential* Balance Mod applied).

Back to the point -I purchased the Empire Interactive double-pack many years ago; I still have one of the CDs (having given away the other to a friend) and the technical reference hard copy -alas! the manual is forever mislaid deep within the bowels of this household somewhere -and wouldn't you know it? Like the idiot I am, the serial code was affixed firmly to the manual instead of the CD jewel case.

So my questions to you, the community, are as follows (as of this date 9th August 2007)

1. There *are* serials out there, but they're almost guaranteed to cause duplication issues when used on autohost, thereby denying me a game with other players?

2. At the time of writing this, my only real option if I want to use autohost's service is to donate a sum of money (up to GBP3.00/USD6.00?, whatever the exchange rate is atm) by Paypal to the sysop, Ron?. (I loathe paypal, and am wondering whether there are other payment options, as it goes. But sure, it's a reasonable amount to pay to get a new serial #)

3. The last patch for the retail 2.7 is 2.7i?

Thanks in advance of any replies!

Given your message I am assuming you are in the UK. The game is actually on sale if you can find it on the GrabIt label for £1. Their website is at http://www.grabituk.com/ but as far as I can tell you can't buy it online yet. I've seen quite a few copies at Poundworld so if you have one of them near you it may be worth a look. The website also mentions that their range have appeared in Tesco, Woolworths and WH Smith although I've not checked them.

Latest version is 2.7j rc3 or 2.6j rc4 which can be downloaded from this website and will be needed if you want to join a game againt other players. You will still need the serial number though.

I would just download 2.6JRC4 at http://starsautohost.org/files/stars26jrc4.zip. It contains all you need except for the serial number.

2.6JRC4 fixes a few bugs compared to 2.7JRC3 & the only difference is that 2.6 has no sound which I don't think too many have ever cared about.

Aha. Interesting -and from the site:

INSTALLATION ISSUES:

Problem: No Serial number.

Solution: Please call technical support or email customer support for a replacement serial number.

Grabit saves the day, it would seem. Not being completely au fait with the myriad examples of difficulties with serials posted here previously, this seems to be the cheapest solution for UK consumers, at any rate. Basically a serial # for GBP0.99, hopefully one Autohost won't reject? Let's go for that, then.

Many thanks, PaulCr - much appreciated.

Presumably they'll only give you one if you've purchased the game from the GrabIt label rather than from Empire. I did purchase one and it did include a serial number so it's not like they forgot to include them. I actually use the serial from my old copy though since I put the label on the cd cover and also wrote it in the technical reference both of which I managed to find although like you I've been unable to find the main manual.

Yup, that's the infuriating part. I collect all original game manuals, to date @500 or so, all in perfect condition. Windows games, DOS games, all the Amiga game manuals you could care to mention safely stored away - except Stars! And Stars! is the only one I wish to return to, after finding gaming of recent years to be less than satisfying and perhaps even shallow experiences...(maybe X3/Bala Gi or SEV are exceptions).

As an aside, I guess a good experiential comparison to Stars! may well be the Harpoon series. Graphically minimalistic, but you can strategise or micromanage to your heart's content -which is what I want to do just now - nothing blousy requiring 99.0 pixel shader support &c. Harpoon's printed manuals and appendices are nicely boxed up in the pile -'cept Harpoon is on 3 AmigaDos formatted disks. UAE gives me a neuralgia, so...

It's been one of those months. Confused Woolworth's will be 99 pence better off by tomorrow night, for sure though.

cheers.

You may purchase serial numbers from Ron - the Autohost administrator. Here is the link to the thread in the forum with the information:

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.
