The Big Cheese Stands Alone

The "Hostile Universe" game is winding down and I am planning to start a new game beginning around July 15th with even more limitations on alliances:

Game Parameters:
1. Only one Ally at any one time. Alliances may be cancelled by either party with a two turn notification.
2. After 2450, the player in first may not be allied with anyone. Each turn he must announce that he is in first place and any alliance is cancelled. (Obviously, in this case there is no two-year notification period).
3. No NAP (Non-aggression Pacts). No ship trading, technology trading, planet trading, or agreements of any type with non-allies.
4. No Email messages between players. All messages must be through “in game” public messages except to allies. Private “in game” messages can be sent to allies and to offer alliances.
5. All non-allies are set to enemy.
6. Players are to be anonymous.
7. I will play in the game as well as host in the game. I will have to have someone else check the races. I also may ask for that the game be set up with an annonymous Email addresses for anyone that I know.
8. Players should use registered version 2.6JRC4 or 2.7JRC3
9. No Preexisting alliances.
10. No collaboration in race design. No pregame disclosure of PRT, LRT, hab ranges or other race statistics to other players prior to the start of the game.
11. Turns to be run earlier of 24 hours after the last turn or whenever all players have submitted. I anticipate this changing to 48 hour turns after 2445 but this could happen earlier if there is a majority vote calling for it.
12. To accelerate the start of the game, the after the first turn the next seven turns will be double turns. Players will be given their turn at turns 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15.
13. Chaff & Split Fleet avoidance allowed. No “cheats” allowed.
14. Up to 16 players
15. Universe Definition:

  • Medium Universe, Sparse Distribution (average 216 planets) unless we have over 10 players. Medium, normal (288 planets) for 11-13 players and Large, sparse (384 planets) for 14 to 16 players
  • Distant Player Postions
  • Slower Tech Advances: No
  • Beginner: Maximum Minerals: No
  • Accelerated BBS: Yes
  • Random Events: Yes
  • Number of Computer Players: 0
  • Public Playing Scores: No
  • Galaxy Clumping: Yes
9. Winning Conditions: Exceed other scores by 100% after 2490 or own 150 planets, or all other currently active players agree to winner. Only one Winner
10. Restrictions on Races: No restrictions except:

  • CAs must leave a minimum of 90 advantage points
  • JOAT must leave a minimum of 45 points
  • IS & IT must leave a minimum of 5 points

Last game (Hostile Universe) I had 110 points for CA and 55 for JOAT. No CAs signed up and only one -f JOAT. In the end the game was largely dominated by IT & IS. Because of this, I lowered the points for CA and JOAT and added some nuisance points for IT & IS. Many would argue that this isn't enough points to make the races equal. My response is that the points were chosen more to encourage diversity and make the game more interesting.

I also am limiting the size of the universe in the number of planets and tightening the winning conditions. Last game the game dragged on a bit n the end the bigger races having to do turns with a lot of planets.

These rules are open to discussion. I welcome and discussion.

Anyone interested should contact me at: DenHam@aol.com.

I'm interested in playing this game, however, it will be my first online game. I have played MP with friends, but we don't exactly use any special rules.

I'm a little confused about the "double turns" thing in #12. Can someone explain that in more detail?

As soon as I figure out how to use the autohost properly I'll be all set ^^.

Don't be afraid to point me in the right direction. ~^.^~

It generally means that two turns will be generated without any chance for you to give orders in between.

For example, in 2400 you'll get your turn (M file) and submit your orders (X file). Then you'll get 2401. Now you have to submit orders knowing that two years will be genned before you get your turn file. So instead of getting 2402 you'll get 2403 that contains two years of data.

The key is to ensure all planets and ships have enough orders to get them through two years. There are other considerations, such as you can keep your ship movements hidden by planet hopping, but you don't have to be on a planet on the even numbered years (in this example). That also means others can do the same, so be aware of that.

Cheers,
Thor

Three beginners have expressed some interest in playing. I think it is probably fair to offer beginners the following handicap: Beginners can play CA, JOAT or other races without leaving any of the points left over (Rule 10). I define a beginner as someone who has not played more than one other multiplayer Stars games, provided they have identified that fact in advance (and provided they haven't won the one multiplayer Stars game they may have played). Any objections to that idea?

There is not much to figure out in autohost. Initial turns will be sent to you and you just have to click on one button on the web page to upload. I will be available to help you with it if you need help.

A couple of people have indicated interest by posting here. That is fine but I don't reserve a space until I receive an Email at Denham@aol.com.

So far I have 5 people indicating interest by Email.

No more vacations, no more crazy trips, no more insane nights..... *sigh* It's good to be boring again (until December, and if this game goes THAT long, we're all in trouble).

We now have 9 players. It looks like a few more might be interested but they haven't sent me an Email.

There are a few vacation conflicts. Because of this, I am not asking for race files until July 25 (instead of July 15) with the game starting right after. Sorry for the delay. I know we were hoping to start the game as soon as possible.

If anyone additional is inteseted please send me an Email at DenHam@aol.com.

do I just E-mail the race file, or is there a special autohost way to do it?

No.
Email me at Denham@aol.com to let me know that you are playing (if you haven't already done so). By Email I will give you instructions on where to send your race file and password if any. Since I am playing in the game, I am having someone else check the race files to make sure they comply with the rules.

When autohost is set up you will receive instructions on uploading and downloadng.

Hmmm... I guess since you have just started the second game, you are still a newbie. Although a few other players said they were beginners and interested in playing, you are the only person who's contacted me by Email and said they were interested in joining as a Newbie.

Of course what would really help a newbie is getting the same 1100 - 1200 race point advantage that the expert AI races get Shocked
.... but that would be too generous.

For anyone interested here is a link to the discussion on the AI races:

We have 13 players. Race files are due by Monday July 30th and we will start right after that. Since we have 13 players the universe will be Medium, Normal distribution. If we get a 14th player in the next few days, I the size will increase to Large, sparse.

I know some players design their race depending on universe size. For that reason I have to finalize the universe size by Wednesday. Thiis means that any new players have to let me know right away if they are interested in playing.

Current Players are:
bab5,
zor98,
blacksheath,
wojtek,
paul-diveboard,
rlavigne,
mvm-galaxy,
kal.zekdor,
allerbys,
baide,
envoy,
donaldbustin

I have decided that this game needs a non-playing host. Consequently, I won't be playing in this game.

All players should send their race file immediately. The game will begin when I receive all the race files.
