Hi everyone! I first played Stars! years and years ago when I got it on a PC Gamer demo CD. I'll spare everyone my revival story of finding old stuff and thinking how great it'd be to play again and blah blah blah just to find that OMG NO! It can't be bought anymore!

A while back I found someplace to download version 2.6j and found a serial for it..now that I know this place exists, if I can get the game to work I'd LOVE to make a donation here for a serial from Ron because I think it's amazing that you guys are keeping the game alive Smile

My problem is: (and forgive me if there's already an answer somewhere...I've spent about an hour or so sifting through various threads and saw nothing like this)

I load the game, when it asks, I put in the serial that I found. It accepts the serial, but every single turn, tells me that I'm an usurper and wants me to put the serial in again. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice that might help me get started?

Many thanks,
Kyran

Stars! 2.60J RC4 detects lot of serials that were published past millenia. Best idea is to search around for bit more fresh ones. Wink I trust there are some published since then in rec.games.computers.stars usenet group for example. Nod For playing in multiplayer you better ask new serial from Ron anyway. It helps to avoid collisions with others. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the quick reply Smile

I just went the most beneficial way for all and made a donation to Ron. In all of my searching I found SO many sites that looked like they were once busy and bussling webrings that are now completely dead..it made me sad inside Sad
This looks to be pretty much the last bastion for Stars! enthusiasts so I don't mind contributing in the slightest.

An option before you get the serial from Ron is to download teh 2.6b demo which limits you but will allow you to play against the AI so at least you can get comfortable with the user interface and used to how to play. I recopmmend playing the turorial game if you have forgotten a lot about the game.

You can download the demo version from Autohost with this link:

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.

I've already paypalled in my donation Smile I downloaded the old old oooold version 1.1something...I hadn't thought about getting the newer demo. It didn't occur to me I guess because on Empire's website it's listed as available but leads nowhere.

*ponder*

I'll do that. Chances are I won't make it far enough to hit any of my tech limits anyway Very Happy

I really appreciate the help. You people ROCK.

How long does it generally take to get a serial?

Ron got me mine within a couple of days ... the only weirdity was that he sent it to my primary paypal address, not the address I'd used to send the money and request. But that might be some sort of standard paypal reply behavior.

If you don't find the serial nos. from your PayPal address, I will send a message to Ron to ask him where he sent it.

That's because I just reply to the email PayPal sends me, which uses the email you have on file with them as the Reply To address.
