Part of the reason people consider it "weak" is they don't think about evacuating all but 100 colonists before a fight at their planet - so even if they lost the starbase, if they control orbit they could just recolonize the next turn and have their planet back. if they don't control orbit, they can shift the colonists off somewhere else to produce resources until the orbit is clear and they can recolonize.

You don't have as many total resources, but those resources are all available for research, terraforming, and shipbuilding. You don't have to spend anything on ramping factories.
Keep in mind that the more evenly spread (taking hab% into account) your population is, the more total resources you get.
And it's much quicker and easier to toss together a Death Star and gate in some midgetminers than to build 1700 factories and 1700 mines.
Don't rely on the stations to defend themselves. Intercept your enemies in space.
