Whats the last Stars! version that was sharware, and where can I get it? (or is the un serialed #ed game the shareware) I want to upload it to a site called C:DOS which specializes in abandonware (hey they have Civ 2 so don;t say Stars! isn't... it hasn't been worked on for a long time) Then perhaps I can help bring new people into the fold, yes.

Hmm. Twisted Evil I suppose the phrase "bite me" would be a bit too strong? Okay, I'll settle for "Have a nice day" instead.

There are 2 'demo' versions available.

The shareware latest version is 2.6b (very old patch level) is limited to tech level 10 and allows unlimited number of turns to play.

The demo version is 2.6i (which is older than the current patch 'jrc4') and is limited to tech 10 and 80 play turns.

Both are available for download from many Stars! sites including here on Stars! AutoHost at http://library.southern.edu/stars/kn2050.htm

The registered version is available for download, but requires a valid serial number to play. Stars! players don't share their serial numbers, so don't bother asking. If Stars! detects the same serial number in use from 2 or more different computers in the same game, very bad things happen to those players' turns. Twisted Evil

Hm, thinking of it this might be an interesting game! All players using pirated serials! It would certainly add an extra dimension to the game!

Plague Master! Something for you perhaps?! Laughing

Good idea! New game:
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
"Serial Killers"
Version - 2.6 or higher
Any patch can be used - first turn on AutoHost - last turn on AutoHost too
Played daily, at least once. Game starts Monday, weekend off.
Turns sent via www.miracle.net
multi-player game, no limit of players
any skill level, especially beginners desirable
Small/short universe with only three sides
Subnormal density
Dense player positions - available in great abundance

Password your race and send serial number for verification.
No more than two serial numbers allowed per player in most cases. Special circumstances will be considered if you want to send more than two.
For entry PM me or jeffmc with valid serial number.
If serial number is good we will send you a bad one to use in this game only. DO NOT pass it around.

All cheats allowed., except shaft and flak, or anything resembling those nasty entities.
Host not playing yet. Host will play in many games later.

If not sure about rules post reply here with questions. There will be many quick answers to be found here.

I love this galaxy.
the Plague Master
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

This game is not to be taken serialoosely.

Not sure if this is the best method, I would be reluctant to send out my serial, better (but not easier) to check by letting players send a race (not the one they will be using) without pasword and make a universe with that, I think that pops up the serial problem in the very first turn and because there is no pasword you can easily check yourself ... OTOH they might pick up a race somewhere, so let the players give the race a specific race name or something like that ...
If the serial problem does not pop up in the first turn than you need the players to send in one turn (no need for a specific race name in that case) ...

Well, no doubt this will be moved to the new games section soon Wink

Don't worry I didn't intend to give out any (or mine MY PRECIOUS) serial numbers. I just want to put Stars! where more people will look at it. I was sort of saying stars! was like civ2 in my first post (but obviously failed... really very badly) Its old, and hasn't been updated (atleast 2.6jrc4 hasn't) for a long time. Nonetheless its an extremely good game, that many people (such as myself) still play. I too put my money on Jeff winning this one, his knowledge of when Stars! was last worked on far surpasses my own, three guesses how.

For having lost contact with Stars! for 3 years before coming back to it I can say that you forget a lot of details and in the first come back you really suck against good "usual" players. Unless you really spend a lot of time reading FAQ's and participating in forums before playing again of course.

Working on the game would not help a lot either regarding gameplay, and even then, Jeff has not worked on the game in a long time. Last updates (J release candidates) mostly modified some security stuff (pirate serials etc) so last real look at play side is quite far behind in time.

Now Jeff, you are the only one AFAIK who can create those killer cheat races so maybe you can still win a game against any expert Wink
