Fledging Admirals

In general Fledging Admirals is a pretty straight short game which is intended to lure back oldtimers (considering themselves beginner to lower intermediate) and to bring in new players. If a friend told you of the game and you are keen on playing but lack a serial code, since some time new ones are available from Ron who is running autohost, look in the following thread:
http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=115 8&rid=1&S=61fac869d52c83dced0186aa5dfbe475&pl_vi ew=&start=0#msg_29817

To make the battleground even, players with some pbem-Stars experience will have to leave some leftover points in the race wizard (see restrictions).

Host is not playing and feel free to ask when you feel unsure about the conditions, Stars-version, abbreviations etc.

# of players: 6 - 9
Skill level: beginner - lower intermediate
Ranked: No
Version: 2.6/2.7j rc3/4
Autohost: Yes
Turns generated: 5 turns a week, Tuesday-Saturday up to year 2420, then 3 turns/week, Tue-Thur-Sat (as soon as requested by at least one player). Weekends and holidays off. If you need a pause, just ask the host.
Host is playing: No
Universe size: Small Packed, Distant Starting Positions
Starting conditions: ACC BBS, Public Player Score
Victory conditions: Last Man/Last Team standing or consensus. Winning team mustn't exceed 2 players.

Restrictions:
1) No pregame alliances which usually means that no players should get in contact with each other to optimize their race design for allying up with each other.
2) No cheats (except chaff and split-fleet dodge), for more infos on bugs or cheats in Stars, see http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=238 7&start=0&rid=775&S=5aa2657847118edaeb45e2d15b4b 231c (or ask the host when in doubt)
3) PRTs:
* SD banned (too much hassle and work)
* JOAT mustn't take NAS

4) Players which have already played a Stars pbem game vs humans will have disadvantages by leaving leftover points in the race wizard:
* SD banned
* JOAT: either 150 leftover points or no NAS + no OBRM
* AR and PP: 0 leftover points (both PRTs not recommended for cempletly new players)
* all other PRTs: 100 leftover points
Leftover points can be spent to whatever you want except mineral concentration.

If in doubt where to sort yourself in (like having played only 1 pbem-game and having found yourself defeated as the first player), send me an email and ask.

Special Rules:
* Germ starting concentration will be between 30 and 60.
* Inactivity: Players which have missed 3 turns will be set to inactive. I'll look for replacements if appropriate but the game won't stop.

If you are interested, please send a race file, the password and your desired email address to me: altruist (at) arglos (dot) net.

We aim to start the game in about 2-3 weeks. I'll keep this post updated to display the players taking part.

Players so far (* race file in):
*Skaffen
*ADG_Wraith
*horza
*Mark
*Triple Point
Greg
John

A note about game length and what you might have to expect:
With the above turn generation and assuming the game will last for about 60 turns, the game will be played over a period of around 18 weeks (more than 4 month). While this is rather short for a Stars-game, I want to remind everybody, it is not wise to sign up for the game when you already know that eg in 2 month you will be away/without internet connection for several weeks.

Small packed games with 6-9 players tend to be very fast paced. Thus you better don't expect a long peaceful development but skirmishes along your frontiers and somebody trying to invade your colonies perhaps as early as in the 10th and first fleets with destroyers in the 20ies. Early scouting is important not only to know your possible enemies but also to find a suitable ally. It's not at all like playing against the AIs, humans are tricky, nasty and look out for your weak spots.

Don't despair when you get wiped out. Usually you learn more from loosing a game than from winning... and the advantage of a short game: you can apply your newly gained knowledge soon in the next game and kick some emperor's ass.

Besides all the wealth of information you can find here, more links to other sides can be found at:
http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=319 5&start=0&rid=775&S=5aa2657847118edaeb45e2d15b4b 231c

And if you get hooked to the game and want to know more, after the game we can discuss what happened, do a tactical analysis of the race designs, the important stages of the game etc.

Regards,
Altruist

Count me in and as discussed before Iīll try to get 2-3 more people to join.

One question: Can we spend the leftover points on what we want? If not, what should they go to?

OK, that was two questions, so sue me... Wink

Hi Altruist,

Just a question: You haven't restricted CA? Is this intended?

I'd like to jump in... probably as an AR race, haven't played one of those before. I'm in the adv. beginner/ lower intermediate range.

Greets Andreas,
yes, it was on purpose. While there are certainly advantages/disadvantages for some PRTs, I think, that in a small/packed galaxy with 6-9 players, those are outweighted by personal style and liking (well, skill might be a facto, too). Thus there is no need to interfere.

While the CA has an economic advantage, most other races have tactical advantages. The latter don't show up in testbeds, though.

Only the JOAT is overpowered in this kind of setting. 3 big advantages are just too many.

Fine.
If you have played already several pbems, perhaps even won one, AR might be the real (and very difficult) challenge for you.

So, as of now we have 7 players. Of those 5 have already submitted their races and my first impression: this will become interesting, may it be rusty oldtimer or beginner, I wouldn't know on whom to bet.

Players so far:
Skaffen
ADG_Wraith
horza
Mark
Triple Point

Greg
John
From players in green I've received the race file.

Time to set a deadline:
Everybody has still time to tweak his/her race design until Friday, 26th January, then I want to have the final creations.

Latecomers are still free to join until the announced max of 9 players is reached.

Over the weekend I'll setup the game and send the files to Ron and if everything runs smoothly the game should start next Monday.

So, after feeling better again and having received the last race file, I've just genned the game and sent the files to Ron.

In a matter of days everything should be set up.

We didnīt get a message yet, maybe Altruist can do another generation if you have a race ready?

Another player would surely be welcome and since one of the missions of this game is to increase the player pool itīd be a shame to turn someone down! Wink

Sorry.
Game files are already sent to Ron.

And yes, it's a shame you are 1 day too late. If it looks like there is demand, I might start another beginner/returning oldtimer game in some weeks. Until then, perhaps one of the other soon to start games can interest you?
