so what engine combinations are worth getting, like so far i've enjoyed using IFE with NRS, and I think it is viable to do full IFE (though i'm not sure how useful it is), but i have no clue whether it's worth doing NRS by itself..does that slow down early growth too much (i assume cheap engines is usually too horrible to be worth getting).
Finally..i really didn't think itw as worth clicking neither IFE or NRS...because in that case you get both...it seems a waste..you're only going to use one type right?

With prop expensive that's the most common combo, and quite often coupled with grav immunity. Without immunity it actually gives you ~25 RW points, allows really fast start, and saves lots of research in prop, needed for better scoops and grav terra-15. Also saves quite some germ for factories (and later for Nubians), and gives you warp-10 and battle speed 2.25 quite early in the game.
OTOH is the IS-10 engine VERY expensive, and very heavy, so it is reserved for BBs/Nubs mostly. But that's a small drawback, that comes into play in the mid-game, where one (being faster in expanding and gaining better economy) can quite easily compensate.
IMO that "IFE+NRSE+prop expensive" combo is too strong. NRSE should give back significantly less points.
BR, Iztok

Sometimes I play without IFE or NRSE. It's painfull to live without the fuel mizer in early game, but in the mid game you get rewarded with cheap lightweight engines.
Works well for -F races that don't need the germ elsewhere *if* you can cope with the lack of the FM. IS for example, can cope well thanks to their cheap and early tech fuel transports.
Another thought - all those prop exensive races will be keen to buy prop12 from you - being significantly different to the other races works wonders for diplomacy.
Another diplomatic advantage: if many races are grav immune and you are grav narrow there's often potential for hab sharing.
If you get a strong ally sometimes you can even buy FM LFs, but timing can be a problem here, it's one of those very time critical trades...
Overall though, +IFE +NRSE +prop_exp +grav_imm is a very strong combination. It's hard to look past, but there are viable alternatives. I agree with Iztok that NRSE should give less points - as it stands I don't think you need points back as the IS10 is arguably reason enough to give up ramscoops on it's own...

I used to go IFE/NRSE/Grav immune a lot.
If you're IT you don't need IFE. Don't take NRSE. Go radiation immune and use the Radiating Hydro-Ramscoop for your first main engine.
ISB is nice as an alternative to IFE, as you can use spacedocks as fuel depots; especially if your hab range is wide.

OK, oldish thread, but I gets me thinking of questions :S
Does anyone play ISB/NRSE/NO IFE/prop cheap (or normal) (/not grav imm)(/not IT)?
I tried it with an HP after reading this just now against AIs and it does quite well but lets face it, they are AIs and you can beat them in your sleep. I mean, does it work against humans? Biggest nuisance was that the CCs were hard to gate during the 150/600 era, which came early (but didn't last long).
