I was hoping someone else has already encountered this and knows its cause and solution.

I have had no problem up until this week's turns from autohost. Now, when I try to view battles I see a greyed out screen and get a windows error message. If I hit continue anyway, I get a GPF crash with the cause said to be the sound.ddl or whatever it is called.

Rest of the turns are entirely normal. I have all the sound options off, makes no difference. Last week didn't see this.

Any ideas?

Sincerely,

Jason Cawley

Hi Jason,

Somebody else had this error before - here's the thread:

http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=117 &rid=343&S=a147df33d481ff075da8080055b5e1ef&pl_v iew=&start=0#msg_922

The solution was to download 2.6 jrc4. Your serial number will work in 2.6 also.

Thanks. That thread makes mention of a sound file to download, but since the link is 4 years old of course it is dead.

As for downloading 2.6 as opposed to using what I have, does that mean I am supposed to go through that whole patching rigamorale again?

Also, it doesn't explain why I did not have the problem until this week.

Also, I've no idea where 2.6 would be, for download.

So right now I am just not watching battles, which is hardly optimal obviously.

Any further substantive help would be appreciated.

Its miswording that "STARS26JRC4.ZIP is the J RC4 beta patch (English-registered shareware) that is being used on AutoHost.(Stars! 2.6)"

Its (currently most bugfree) stars! executable and no patch (i think).

There is no patch to JRC4. JRC4 was the last released version of Stars!. The file on AH is the complete executable so there is no need to download any previous version and update it.

I may actually have that sound file somewhere though I have only ever used 2.6. Certainly, we can find someone still playing that has the dll.

I have the wavemix.dll file around, so I could send it to you if you want me to.

I can also put it up on my homepage so we can set up a live link for it, but I will not have time for that before sometime next week.

The dll came with my Stars! CD, and I still carry it around with my Stars files even if I'm playing with JRC4 exclusively. Very Happy

And, as fate would have it, I just located wavemix.dll v1.50 and v1.80 with a lucky googling. Stars uses v1.70, tho. Twisted Evil

Thing is, if you play with JRC4, sound should never be a problem. Rolling Eyes

wavemix.dll is still available from our favourite Stockmann Academic Bookstore too since its a direct file download and not a link to a download page, I assume its the correct version. I've never actually used v2.7x

Actually, though the Stockman page does list the files, they are not available for download (I just tried). I live in Helsinki where Stockman's is - I'm actually surprised the page still exists.

Wavemix.dll is a generic file for playing multiple wave files simultaneously in Windows. This has (of course) all been superceded by later versions of Windows after 3.11.

However, newer versions of the wavemix.dll file are available, and, I suspect that a newer version probably would not cause XP to crash or cause the 2.7 version to go 'blinky'. It would maybe worth trying if anyone 'really' cares about the sounds. Since I started with buying Stars! via a phone call to Seattle and a credit card at version 1.3, then simply kept on upgrading, I have never used the boxed 2.7.

I have sent Jason the 2.6jrc4 verson along with the latest help file.

Well bugger. I guess you could just get it here then Wink

Edit: Or not(again) seems to be a permissions problem which I need the admin for grrrr

Edit 2: rar/zip files seem to be unaffected...download away Smile

Yep. Just download that, unzip it and run it. No patching or anything.

If I'm travelling and need to play a turn from a friend's house or something, I normally just Yahoo email myself my .h file. When I get internet access while away I download STARS26JRC4.ZIP, run the exe, type in my serial number (from memory), download my .h file from email and the turn file from autohost and bingo.

Old habits die hard, and I've been playing Stars! longer than USB flashdrives have been available Laughing
