Back in 2003 I think I hosted a game called Spacebar. The planets were remapped into a horizontal bar about 900 LY across and about 150 LY wide.
It was ugly. It was brutal. It was the mother of all knife fights. I've been pressured lately to start one more game lately and chose Spacebar II.
I'll get a pic posted to a sample map so you can see the amount of fun you will have. Passworded race files should be emailed to fish at csfbl dot com with "Spacebar" in the subject.
Spacebar II
Game parameters:
HOSTED on AUTOHOST (HOST will play)
GENERATION: 48 hours between generations
NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 12-16
PLAYER SKILL LEVEL: Beg - Low Intermediate (Advanced players - contact me first. You'll be given a handicap)
UNIVERSE SIZE: Med (will depends on number of players)
DENSITY: Sparse
PLAYER POSITIONS: Special - Remapped
OPTIONS: Accelerated BBS play
Random Events: Yes
Public Player Scores: No
Galaxy clumping: No
Slower tech advance: No

- SPLIT FLEET DODGE
Other cheats are not allowed.
VICTORY CONDITIONS: Game will officially end at 2475 with the #1 player being declared the winner. Alliances may be formed,
but the the victory conditions are set in stone. (Watch for backstabs!)
Players are set inactive after missing four (unexplained) turns, but will be set active again when they submit a turn.
If anyone has to drop, please try to find a replacement first, and let me know you are dropping rather than just stopping submitting turns.

I'm taking a handicap...
GR, UR, and BET, plus one other one that will hinder my PRT.
I know a few of you are working on races. Anyone else interested?

I'd like to create a map similar to the one we'll be playing in, but I've never edited a map before. Where can I get some more help with that? I know that there are editors out there, would appreciate some pointers.
Thanks!

There's a version of Universe Creator on the download page.

You should be able to use that to do it quite easily.

I'm kinda rough on this since I have not done it in awhile.
I use mapper.exe and I create a simple 2 color image in paint, saving it as a gif in my stars! dir.
I run it in in command prompt...
mapper spa.xy testmap.gif
then delete spa.xy
rename mapped.xy spa.xy
then load your turn and start playing
Ships will be out of place, but simply give orders to a planet nearest your HW and it should correct them.

I live up north, in Ely MN, by the BWCAW. If you live in Dinkytown, you are probably a college student. I happen to be a college teacher, at a community college.
