New game concept - Diadochi Wars
In 323BC Alexander The Great died and a power struggle ensued. The main protagonists were Alexander’s generals and administrators. This group of people became known as the Diadochi (Greek word meaning “successors”).
The universe will be shaped around the area of the Aegean sea & the surrounding landmasses (Greece/Macedonia, Western Turkey (Asia Minor) & Crete). This will be accomplished using a template (Map of the Aegean which I have already created) applied using Universe Creator. Planets will be highly clumped to represent cities though there will also be scattered planets representing islands & villages.
Most of the original gen. parameters are of little consequence since the universe will be regened as above, but they are: Huge/Sparse/Distant (600 planets mostly situated in 27 “Cities”)
Also: BBS
Voting to take place to determine whether Slow Tech, No Random Events, Public Scores.
Victory: By majority decision (abstainees are excluded from the vote)
For the sake of historical flavour I would like players to use race names that represent people who were involved in the Diadochi wars – see list at end of this post.
Special Conditions:
1. No dual HW PRTs (IT, PP)
2. Alliances limited to 4 members (can change alliances but if 4 members already must drop a current ally before introducing a new one).
3. Only chaff & fleet splitting allowed – all other cheats/bugs are banned.
I intend to play myself & to host the game on Autohost.
I NEED A NEUTRAL (non-player) to generate and adjust the universe and to move HWs to ensure as fair a go as possible (all tools & precise instructions provided). This should take 2-3 hours. ANYONE??
If I find a neutral, great!! Otherwise I will have to do it myself, which would present a problem such that I will have to know the Planet IDs of all HWs to adjust placement.
The only reasonable solution would be to publish the info to all players.
Turn Generation:
Daily until year 2430. After that, if 4+ players wish it, turns will be every 2-days.Weekends: Majority decision. If no weekends & turns every 2-days, turns will be Mon,Wed,Fri.
Xmas Break: Yes. We'll need to decide the details.
A little more history:
The Diadochi are known by historians as the collective name of the successors of Alexander the Great.
Very briefly: Following Alexander's mysterious death, aged 33, in 323BC, the Diadochi divided up responsibility for the various parts of the Macedonian empire, the greatest ever know. Peace was, however, fleeting as most member of the Diadochi sought increased power.
The 1st of 4 Diadochi Wars erupted in 321BC and the last ended in 281BC. During that time almost all members of the Diadochi,, and many of their heirs, were assassinated,, killed in battle or executed.
The historic characters (races) available to play this game are:
Olympias. Alexander's mum. Killed her son so that grandson could rule. Executed 317BC.
Roxana. Alexander's #1 wife. Powerfull & ruthless. Executed 310BC.
Alexander IV – Son of Alexander/Roxana. Killed 310BC
Craterus. Alexander's Son-in-law. Guardian of Arrhiados (Alexander IV). Killed c.320BC.
Philip III (Arrhidaeus) – “Feeble-minded” brother of Alexander. Killed by Olymias . Unsure of year.
Perdiccas - Regent of Philip III. Killed 321BC.
Antipater. Ruler of Macedonia & Greece. Regent of Philip III from 321BC. Died 319BC.
Cassander. Son of Antipater. Ruler of Macedonia & Greece, part. After 310BC. Died 298BC.
Antipater II – son of Cassander – co-ruled Macedonia. Expelled 294BC.
Alexander V – son of Cassander – co-ruled Macedonia. Killed 294BC.
Pleistarchus – brother of Cassander. Ruled Cilicia from 301BC – vanquished 299BC.
Polyperchon – Regent from 319BC. Fate Unknown.
Phaleron (Demetrius of) – Governor of Athens from 317BC. Expelled 307BC.
Eumenes: Ruler of Cappadocia. General of Alexander, then Perdiccas, Polycheron - Killed 316BC.
Lysimachos. Ruler of Thrace & Central Asia Minor. Killed 281BC to end Diadochi wars
Antigonos “one-eyed” - Ruler of Phrygia and, later, half the empire. Very powerfull 316-305BC. Killed 301BC.
Demetrius "the beseiger". Son of Antigonos. Ruled various parts at various times. Controlled the Aegean sea. Died in prison 283BC.
Gonatas (Antigonos) – son of Demetrius. Recaptured Macedonia from Celts 276BC & established Antigonid Dynasty which lasted until 168BC
Seleucos. Ruler of Persia + other areas at various times. Lost it to Antigonos & sought Ptolemy's protection. Retook Persia 305BC and established the Seleucid Empire. Assassinated 281BC.
Ptolemy: Ruler of Egypt (& Syria on & off) - Survived the wars!!
Ceraunus (Ptolemy). Disinherited Son of Ptolemy - Siezed Macedonia. Killed 279BC by Celts.
Neoptellemos. Ruler of Armenia. Killed c.320BC.
Alcetas: Ruler of Psidia. Fate unknown.
Pyrrhus – King of Epirus. Fate Unknown.
Cleitos. Commander of the Royal Fleet under Perdiccas but defected 321BC. Fate unknown.
Can’t remember others – like the guy who unsuccessfully invaded southern Italy only to be killed when an old woman threw fruit at him (a melon?).
Some historians spell some of the names differently (eg. Kassandra, Antipatros)

So are all the cities clump going to have the same number of planets? Or do larger "Cities" have bigger clumps?
Just curious.

The template used is a mono bmp file - when UC is used with the template stars are redistributed so that the whiter an area in the bmp file is, the more dense the stars are in that area.
UC also contains a sensitivity setting which will determine how strictly the template will be applied.
My Aegean map template used with a sensitivity of 17 resulted in 75% stars in the "Cities" & that averaged 17 stars per "City" - the number was however variable: range was 13-22. I think, however, that a sensitivity of 15 may be better which would result in abt 85% fidelity (avg. city size = abt. 19)

It makes sense to have number of planets per city change depending on city size, but with a 13-22 spread, will it give a player who starts in a big city to much advantage?

It may be possible to make it a little more even by regening several times in UC until it looks about right but it can never be even because UC doesn't provide parameters to allow that.
UC places stars weighted by the tone of the various areas of the bmp but it randomly places stars in areas that have the same tone.
In my bmp: cities are white (very high probability), land masses including islands are darkish grey (low probability) & the sea is black (no possibility).
Note tho that a significant number of cities will begin "unoccupied" - adjustment of HW placement is important to fairness & that is the primary reason I needed a neutral for setup.
It might not be possible to make the playing surface exactly level but it should be possible to make it at least as fair as is a normal stars! generated galaxy.
Also, I have added 2 heavily populated islands to alleviate the relative isolation of Cretan cities & the island of Naxos (in the middle of the Aegean). Isolation is a defensive advantage, I think, but is probably outweighed by the difficulty in meeting potential allies in the early game.

5 players so far.
If anyone wants to check out the bmp of the Aegean Sea template let me know.
It is 467K tho so you would have to give me a standard email address if u don't have one already in your profile.

Still only 5 players!:
Antigonos (race file not yet in)
Perdiccas
Cleitos
Craterus
Ptolemy (race file not yet in)
I thought that this scenario would generate more interest than this. The universe size is defined for a full complement but that now looks very unlikely.
In this scenario I need at least 8 though but:
If only 8-10 then it would probably be best to use 384 planets (Large/Sparse).
If 11-13 then 512 (Large/Normal).
I still want to leave some wide open places as in the original idea so I don't want to go smaller than Large. I would also reduce the number of "Cities" to 19 & 24 respectively.
If 14-16 players then as original (600 planets).
I propose to give this 2 more weeks and if the required players are not forthcoming I will abandon the intended game (I might repost at a later time in the hope that more players are available at that time - there seems to be almost as many new game posts as players signing up at the moment). I'm relatively new to this forum tho - maybe it's normal?

I haven't been counting but yeah there seems to be more games being abandoned for lack of player that I remember in times past; and less games on offer too. I started to wonder about Pirates! at the begining of the year, and I'm now wondering if the endles supply of pirates idea is going to work, since it sorta needs constant new players. (sorry for stealing them all )

Is this game still on?
I may be interested bot would prefer not to spend the time on a race if the game is off.

I also am interested in this game, but have sent in a racefile to the Spacebars proposed game as my first choice. It appears unlikely that game will get going, however. If it is officially dropped, then I would like to join this one. So, probably you will have me as one more player, but it's not official yet.

Sorry - been away a few days.
2-3 new players looks like the game will proceed after all.
That makes 7 or 8 players with Sr.Seven, Staz & lefnufrag (probable).
Phillip III reserved for Staz.
I think we should wait another week or 2 - particularly if SpaceBar II does not proceed.
