Hi everybody!
It seems there is a runaway race here... (I am not the Bukane, obviously) - I think by following the spirit of the game we should call the Bukane winner, but I will leave it to the Muppets, who seem to be the only race able to slow them down.
The rules allow to ofc to stop fighting each other and attack Bukane, but it is not allowed to set each other to friend or communicate to coordinate attacks - makes it quite difficult.
So under these conditions if there is someone who thinks there is still a chance to stop them - then we all should try.
Still in case the Bukane are declared winner, I have some questions about the game and would like to start a discussion on that:
1.) Did you think the general game-settings are ok? Would you change something like density, size, clustering, slow tech, random events etc.?
I personally would check next time the planet distribution, or homeworld locations result in better chances for everybody, but the game settings is something I like...
2.) Do you think the player skills were "all experts" and what would you change? Have more players and fill the game up even if they are not "experts" or play with fewer players but have same skill for all? I think that with a 2 alliance rule it is not that bad if some players are just advanced so the ally can help a bit and take the "lead", but a newby can kill the fun... I am not sure and all my neighbours (and ally) were ok or I could not find someone playing really bad...
3.) The 1-ally rule - good or bad idea?
4.) Starting a new game...
Are you interested in starting a new game with similar rules?
I would love to... but I am quitting my job now and moving to another city starting a new job, so maybe not right now...
Maybe in a month or two?
Comments welcome
Robert

1) I would like to have "clustered" off... It sometimes makes a mess of the planet names, which I usually put on. The rest is quite okay.
2)
nRavergz:
Keep him in! He's good. Should have playtested his race a bit more before the game, it turned out to be too slow. Luckily there was enough time to get it started. I would let him play my turns - says enough.
Foodfight:
Must have been played by a very good player, I'm sure about that. We were full of awe all game long, from their finest hour in 2435 to the last sent packets this turn. PP is the most challanging race to play as you cannot negotiate with your neighbours here. So as nobody wants to have a PP enemy late in the game, everybody will attack you (according to my pre-game thoughts .
Quartez:
Well... They were fuzzy, unpredictable, but never really did something special. The amount of ships he lost in detonating minefields showed: not a top player... He should have started taking Foodfight as teacher/leader. Guess he didn't do that. Verdict as far as *I* can see it, and sorry to be harsh, I mean in personal life the guy might be a real cool guy: intermediate with little hope of improvement.
Atari:
I was totally surprised in 2435 or so to see (chameleons) him loose half his planets to a packet attack. I was like... How can anyone but a noob not see this coming... I mean at this level. What the **** is going on here??? This lead to that thing with Alter Ego asking for turn files. My thought now: The player is very much okay, but likes to chat a lot. A whole lot. He is a negotiator who can win by diplomacy. But in this game there is no room for such a thing. So maybe, just maybe, he chatted with Foodfight to negotiate a save border, and Foodfight mumbled some vague answers (as appropriate), Atari thought his border was save, and Foodfight then did what was appropriate. SOMETHING like that. Maybe I'm seeing ghosts here . Anyway: guess Atari is okay. He got nice output out of his small territory afterwards and kept going, had too many enemies in the beginning and gambled wrong.
Muppets/Snakes:
They didn't do much more then little probing attacks. They didn't have much options... They were buzy with the Plasmatics and P-Elastica the whole game, so those players can make a better judgement.
3)
I think this single ally thing is a bit flawed. Think of it: once you pick your ally, usually without full information, you're stuck with it the whole game... There aren't that many choices, and if 8 out of 12 players have radiation low or so, some alliances will only colonize half their territories. Almost game over... I do believe that agressively scouting for an ally as soon as 2400 is the way to go. I did it, got about 5 proposals, and could pick the right one.
An idea: a game without formal NAPs, and with all diplomacy to be done in at the most *one* message per turn at the forum. So: readable for everyone. No emails, no MSN, no private messaging, no fixed allies.
That's my 2c Back to work.

I certainly didn't play this very well.
My race wasn't anywhere near robust enough, and wasn't able to cope with a very poor hab draw and what turned out to be a surrounded starting position as well.
I was very surprised that I wasn't wiped out a lot earlier (and I mean a LOT earlier, not just 10 years earlier, or something)
I guess Foodfight would have done the job, but he had too much to do elsewhere.
In general I think the rules worked.
More could have been said, within the rules, but wasn't.
Maybe the starting incident, and the mid game inquisition scared us all off from saying anything at all.
I like clumped.
Whilst Foodfight hasn't won, I think he played well.
He found time to toy with both Rzecz and me, whilst trying to stop the flood from the East.
Best ship has to be the Bukane speed 2.5, jammed, SML.
They just go where they like and how do you kill them in anything like an economic fashion with Weap 12/14 ?

1.) For me this was fine...
2.) I believe there was some variance in skill level, but the overall commitment was excellent.
3.) The 1-ally rule - good or bad idea? this was a stretch for me because of no diplomacy, but l found it refreshing I simply focused on the job at hand.
4.) Count me in.
So can we ask, who is who? [edited to add my realname.] Some know me as NeoGrendal (AKA Tracey Peyton), if not than you don't know me at all.
PS... so by the length of my comments and Bukanes can you tell who did all the talking? l'm a walk softly and carry a big stick kind of guy.
For the most part the game play was Bukane's but I contributed weapon's tech and some early logistics. The key to the whole game was locking up the SE corner very early in the game and keeping a -F PP race at bay. As soon as we did that we were sure that we would win and that was by 2030. we had a lot of room to grow and research tech.
