I am planning to host a new Stars game on Autohost. I have hosted many games on a different forum and all of the games were continued until a winner was declared. Although I am an avid Stars player, I do not play in the games that I host. This gives me a chance to be an unbiased moderator.
Since I am not playing in the game, parameters will be open to discussion and agreement by the majority of players. Question marks signify items to be agreed upon.
Game Parameters:
1.Independent Host (I will not be playing in the game)
2.Players should use registered version 2.6JRC4 or 2.7JRC3
3.Players are to provide their password to the host (me). This must be updated whenever it is changed.
This is for two reasons. (1) To allow me to occasionally monitor the game to insure that no rules have been broken and (2) To allow me to get a replacement player for viable races if and when players disappear without notice.
4.Host will attempt to replace missing players if their race is deemed playable.
5.No Preexisting alliances.
6.No collaboration in race design. No disclosure of PRT, LRT
or other race statistics is to other players prior to the start of the game.
7.Anonymous Players (No public announcement on who is which race. During the game when races meet each other in space, they can feel free to disclose such information).
8.Turns to be run earlier of 24 hours after the last turn or whenever all players have submitted. Based on majority vote this could be changed to be less frequent and/or provide for a 24 hour delay for a major holiday.
9.Chaff & Split Fleet avoidance allowed. No “cheats” allowed.
10.Universe Definition subject to majority vote. These issues will be decided early enough for players to have this information for race design.
• 8 to 16 players (depending on turnout)
• Size of Universe and Density subject to vote by majority of players (Example Medium Universe, Normal density, player positions farther)
• Slower Tech Advances: No?
• Number of Computer Players: 0?
• Accelerated BBS: Yes?
• Galaxy Clumping: No?
• Public Score: No?
• No Other boxes Checked?
• Winning Condition: One Winner: Exceeds other score by 120% or everyone agrees to a winner? (Is the winner only one player or is it the top team?)
11.Restrictions on Races? I would like to open the discussion on this. The decision on this would be subject to majority vote. The purpose of such restrictions would be to limit the game so we wouldn’t have mostly factory-less CAs, regular CAs & JOAT races. Some of the possible restrictions could be (A) No factory-less CAs, (B) No CAs at all, (C) JOATs must not select NAS, or some combination of these restrictions. Another possibility would be requiring CAs or CAs and JOATs to have a minimum number of race “advantage points” left over.
12.Alliance Restrictions: None?
Any alliance restrictions subject to discussion and vote.
13.Accelerated Start: No?
I hosted several games where the first few turns were double turns. In other words all players received turns 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 (sometimes up to turn 20). Of course everyone gets the message that they missed one turn and they would have to plan each turn to accommodate moves during the missed turns. A lot of things can happen in the missed turns including occasional attacks, but the advantage is that the game is jump started. After 10 to 20 turns the turns reverted to single turns. I don’t think initial double turns can be done easily with autohost. I would probably have to do it manually or just set autohost for turns every 12 hours for the first turns. Unless this is an option that interests a majority of players, the default choice will be no for accelerated start.
Please Email me if you want to play. Please post comments and suggestions on game parameters on this thread.

Quote: | Autohost can generate multiple years at a time. I don't remember the exact details but 2 year gens are possible
|
There is a box with the field name of: 'Number of Years to Generate' on the host screen. Just stick a number 2 in there and AH will generate 2 turns at a time. The Host just logs in to the host screen for the game and changes it to a 1 when he wants the jump start over and generations returned to 1 year per turn.

Preliminary Voting Resuls:
Not all the votes are yet in but we already have a majority of votes deciding some of the key game parameters:
Game Size and Density will be Medium Normal
Other Issues Decided:
Accelerated BBS YES
No Restrictions on Alliances but Only One Winner
We need a few more votes to decide other issues.
We have enough votes to indicate that there will be restrictions on races but we need a few more votes to decide on the exact restrictions. Leading the votes is the choice "No CAs and JOAT must not be NAS", the alternative would require CAs to leave 100 points and JOATs to leave 50 points.
I will post again when more has been decided.
We are still looking for new players. Please contact me at DenHam@aol.com if you are interested.

The Unwritten Rule |
Fri, 28 April 2006 12:55 |
|
|
The Unwritten Rule:
One additional unwritten rule that I should not have to mention. No player may play more than one race. The reason I mention it is about 6 years ago I had to take over a race in a game that my friend was hosting. The game was in about the 80th turn when the host found out that one player was playing two races under different Email addresses. The player was kicked out and banned from other games in this forum for violating this unwritten rule. This player claimed that he didn't know it was illegal and that he played both races independenty. Although there was no written rule in that game stating he could not play two races, it is impossible to play two races independently. His two neighboring races weren't attacking each other and certainly couldn't attack each other with a surprise attack. I took over one of the player's races because he was in first place and the other players wanted to finish the game.
Also, if there are two or more family members wishing to play in the same game, I ask that they please identify that they are in the same family and get approval for it in advance. I hosted one game where a father and son played together. Both identified that fact in advance and agreed to play independently. It was allowed only after the other players said it was OK. I don't believe the two players were ever allied in the game and to my knowledge they both played the game without any undue influence on each other.
