If such a beast is located, I strongly recommend that it gets sent to Ron since he has contact with Jeff McBride periodically and he could ask Jeff what he wants to do. Since Empire doesn't support the game anymore anyway, I think that may void Empire's contract and rights over the game. Most contracts such as Empire will have had for this game specify the support for the product. Failing to support the product would be a breach of the contract, and so the contract would be void and all rights would revert back to Jeff McBride and Jeff Johnson.

Wasn't there a 'pirate' keygen for the 2.7i version, and any keys it generated got blocked in 2.7j? I know this is true for lists of keys floating around, but I remember reading something about a keygen too.
So if anyone finds one and wants to do anything other than deleting it, first check that it created valid keys for 2.7j.

I'm almost 100% sure you CAN generate keys for 2.7j. I had this monster in the past but lost, though I remember how it works. (If needed, I can contact again persons that I got it from - it was published for some time on the russian stars-related web site.) That keygen was using one Stars! key and generate other keys based on that one. Each next key is variation of initial by adding some number. So a vast number of next generated keys have first 2 characters matching to the intial key used as input. To fix keygen use problem, Stars! 2.7j simply denies any key that have 2 (or 1???) starting characters equal to the widely known keys. However (PROBABLY - I did not test this ), if you run keygen for hours, you reach a point when first 1 character of next new key would not match with initial key, and that new key would probably be valid for 2.7j.
(I hope this info does not reveals anything too important and destructive )

afaik that's exactly how it worked. (i might not remember everything, it was _years_ ago. ) so basicly anyone, who has a valid key could gen an almost unlimited amount of new valid serials.
a while ago i tried to find that russian site where it was, but either i couldn't find it, or it's down like many other Stars sites. however, there are couple more places i could ask about this program. the only question is: is it really needed at this moment? i mean, it's like that famous box - u open it once, u cannot close it...

Well, most keys work like a barcode check digit. You take a string and apply a formula to it so that the last couple characters equal a calculated value. Take any 3 or 4 serial numbers (maybe even just 2 will be enough) and it isn't that difficult to crunch them and reverse locate the correct formula.

If Jeff wanted Ron to have a keygen then Ron would already have a keygen. But I could be wrong.
You'd have to read the contract first, everything else is just presumption.

No, that's not the reason. The main reason I havn't commented on it is that I havn't read any messages in The Bar for over 6 months.
I don't know if you recall, but I assign rank points to every post. That is how people rise in rank on the forum, rather than on the # of messages they post.
I was worried that I'd lose track of which threads contained messages that I had not yet ranked, but it turns out that it works out just fine, so I'll be wading through all the posts in here to rank them.
As for the key gen, see my reply further down.

A few days ago, I received an email from a throw-away Yahoo account containing the URL to a Stars! serial number generator. The email said that the person had tested it (he didn't say which Stars! patch version he used) and had no trouble with it.
I have contacted Jeff McBride about the tool (and about the serial number proxy tool Wumpus made) and he said that he had no problems using either method. He also said that if he had the time and could find the Stars! source code, he'd release a version that wouldn't need serial numbers.
This doesn't mean that anyone should post the URL (if they find it) for the generator. I would prefer it to remain non-public as much as possible. I havn't yet decided on which route to take. If I do decide to use the generator, I would want to gen serials myself and keep track of them.

It would be nice, but my reading of the situation is that Jeff has moved on from Stars, so is unlikely to spend time fixing any bugs unless they are _really_ easy. He'd already be doing us a huge favour releasing a version that doesn't require serial numbers.
|
C'mon, we can dream, can't we?
Besides, those two bugs should be very very easy to fix, certainly easier than wrestling out the serial protections.
The actually quite simple "distance display formatting" bug should be trivial to fix, too.
But, just in case some help was needed, I have a couple ancient compilers in some backup disk...

And if the serial generator that Ron has now works fine, he doesn't need to either. Tho it might become necessary to keep a record of serials to avoid accidental duplicates.
