In a recent game that I am playing in (Random Plagues) we are not supposed to have any research going on for five years (that is our plague) so I set my research to 0%. The next year I still managed to research a level in propulsion which seemed quite odd to me. Then I checked out my research screen and determined that with research set to 0% I am still getting 900 points of research each year, which I am assuming is due to the boost that Generalized Research (GR) provides.

Just thought people might be interested in a way to get a small amount of free research at a point in the game when you might be wanting to put all your resources into ship production instead of research.

For those of you involved in the Random Plagues game the Plague Master has devised a new way to deal with races that have this tiny bit of innoculation against the plagues.

Isn't this just the case that you have maxed out your production on a planet (say more factories/mines than your colonists can use with automated build orders) and therefore the excess points drop into the research pool?

Maybe I am wrong, I haven't played this game for a while!

Haileris is right. The other thing to consider is where you are building say a Battleship but do not have enough minerals to complete in one year so it takes two years. That means in year one you have free resources from that planet queue, which goes in to research.
To stop this you can put Mineral Alchemy ( Autobuild ) at the top of the production queue and it will only get produced when you are actually short of minerals.

However to prevent complete research just end all production queues with mineral alchemy ...
That way you don't have to check if you have enough minerals ...

This is just wrong: if you don't put ressources in research, then GR has nothing to do with it. GR distributes your ressources, it does not do what you say.

A good reason for what you are explaining is that you may have planets that are developped already so they are not using the ressources they produce (like when the queue goes "green" or "grey"), another one is what has been explained that you don't have enough minerals to complete some ship in queue.

In all cases, ressources that are not used by the production queues at each planet ALL go to research, no matter what the % is set at. The only way to block that effect is to put something in queue that is always possible to build at any time: mineral alchemy (as needed), as explained as well.

One thing that is not mentionned in this thread, is that you may also suffer of the "beginner's syndrome": for example:

Factories up to 10
Mines up to 10

If you have, say, 500 ressources availables, you will overflow the requirements of these orders, and those ressources will go... guess where? Yes, in research!

Beware of those 900 ressources you are putting in research, if your plaguemaster told you not to research, then you are not obeying! (which is almost cheating Wink ) In his place, I would punish you for doing that when you should not... Twisted Evil

Good luck,

Thank you very much. I resemble that statement. Smirk
I have been about as nice a nasty Plague Master as I can be. Which is not very nice I am afraid. But the niceness is ending now... again.Crazy

This gross spreading of infection is causing me much pleasure indeed. And I am having more pleasure than ever any plague has offered. I hope this plague happens more often.Cheers

But do keep looking for fresh ways to clean up your act. Perhaps some defense building or planetary scanners or ...

To those who continue to disobey, I say:
May you float forever in the garish excrement foraging from the secret gland of a Vomitian Papchung.

Nasty the Plague Master Yuck

I'm also confounded...

I have 100+ blue or black mineral alchemy at the end of every queue and yet the research panel still shows some projected research points. My best guess is its coming from the ships the <expletive deleted> scrapped for my violation last turn(forgot to check it at 2am)

[edit]

Got it...alchemy(auto) at the top...100+ at the bottom

Well you should clarify that with your host. No research doesn't mean no production. If you put your alchemy at the top of the queue you won't build anything but some very expensive minerals.

In you place I would be building warships to take advantage of all those ressources and your neighbours Smirk

Put "alchemy... as needed" at the end of the queue just to avoid overflow into research, not to kill your economy! Shocked

If you still have some projected points in research, maybe you have something in queue that cannot be completed due to a lack of minerals, put that below alchemy until you have them.

If all fails, show your will to obey the rules by putting those points in a useless field, like Biotech above 7 etc.

If your plaguemaster is still doing nasty stuff to you, then, well, ... bad luck! Twisted Evil
