Welcome Very Happy

Unfortunately I won't have time to join your game myself as I've just signed up to a huge packed team game (eek!!!) But I've got several comments / suggestions regarding the voting system that I hope might be interesting to you:

1) Perhaps you should make it 3 of 5 votes required to win, rather than just a majority, as the game could currently end on the first vote if any one voter decides to vote for someone other than themselves.

2) Can a player that is not in the top 5 win? (Difficult to arrange, but perhaps possible.)

3) With solo-victory it is hard to see the motivation to vote for anyone _other_ than yourself (except for such a 'spoiler' player as present in my first comment.) Perhaps you should ban self-voting to force players to consider their votes carefully. This would need to be in conjuction with a 'minimum votes needed to win' to avoid a fluke victory if players start voting randomly in the first couple of elections.

And what I think is my best, but most radical idea:
4) An alternate possibility is weighted voting - have all voters rank each other in their prefferred order (1-5), then sum the resulting scores with the 'best' score being declaring victor if they have a sufficient margin (say 40%) over their closest competitor. I think this method of voting should give fairly 'genunine' results and isn't as open to manipulation.

That was the plan. Smile

yes. Convince at least 3 of the top 5 to vote for you.

Indeed. I actually do want this to be a last-man-standing game, but I am trying to provide a reason for players who aren't in first or second place to hang in. I hate when players in 4th or 5th who control a mere 10% of a 16 player galaxy just stop submitting turns. My goal is that the top 5 at least will stick well into the 2500s.

My fear here is bloc voting. Pf 2nd/3rd/4th/5th all vote the same person in second, we could have a winner without any significant diplomacy. This might be a way to generate a winner after 2550 if the game is bogged.

I'll look into it for that purpose at least.

Ah, I figured you were looking for a diplomacy centered game. In a diplomacy environment, I figure if somebody can persuade all the other players to give them their secondary votes then they deserve a diplomatic win. But this sounds like it could end it early.

I'm not sure all 2nds are enough. Here's a little play:

Rows show the votes cast by each player, columns are the votes recieved. I've assumed B to E votes B 2nd. To make the margins as big as possible I've made the votes cast to C, D, E as balanced as possible. I've assumed A knows B is his biggest threat so has ranked him last.

1 is best, 5 is worst.

         A B C D E
A 1 5 4 3 2
B 5 1 2 3 4
C 5 2 1 3 4
D 5 2 4 1 3
E 5 2 3 4 1
votes 21 12 14 14 14

Margin between B and next best is only 2 points, so he's only 16.7% ahead of next best. I've had a play with the numbers, and if you set a minimum margin of 30%, then in the same scenario B could still only win if A ranked him 4th AND one of the other players ranked the A 3rd or better (Like this:)

         A B C D E
A 1 4 5 3 2
B 3 1 2 4 5
C 5 2 1 3 4
D 5 2 4 1 3
E 5 2 3 4 1
votes 20 11 15 15 15

Obviously here B is still only able to win because the votes for C D E came out perfectly balanced.

Bascially, to make the diplomatic win you'd need to be very good at what you do Smile And the beauty is it doesn't require people to go against nature and vote against themselves!

30% margin is probably way too tough though, 20% is probably enough to be a major challenge to get.

Phew. Not quite sure why I just did all that Rolling Eyes seeing as you've already told me you want to keep it simple Smile

CA – Tri-Immune Only

Just out of curiosity, have you any thoughts on how a tri-immune CA could be made to work, or is this effectively the same as banning that PRT ?

More or less.

OK, that's 5. Unless someone backs out this is an official game. I will finalize the settings etc. later this week and send along an address to which race files can be sent.

So far I have

1- Me
2- Staz
3- Donjon
4- Gible
5- JohnFowle

Plenty of room for more. Smile I'm going to close entry at the end of the week, so speak up before then if you are interested.

Universe is still small? yes? yes? (I'll still play with medium, but I'd prefer small...unless we get an influx of players at the last minute...its happened before)

Yes. I am following this guide for universe size:

<5 - No Game
5 - Small Normal
6/7 - Small Dense
8/9 - Small Packed
10/11 - Medium Normal (I Hate Sparse)
12-13 - Medium Dense
14+ - Medium Packed

I have made a call for race files. I have PM'd everyone who has expressed interest with info on how to get me their race file. The sooner you get them to me, the sooner we can get started. PLEASE remember to password your race files.

I currently have SIX players, so we will be playing in small dense.

1- Me
2- Staz
3- Donjon
4- Gible
5- JohnFowle
6- Ashlyn
7- ???

I can take up to one more player without changing universe density. If you'd like to be that player, or an alternate, PM me, and get me a race file ASAP. I AM going to cap the game now at 7 players so that we all know the size and density, so if you're interested, no point in holding out.

I will gen the game with 5, 6, or 7 players on later than Wednesday (2/15), so get those races in.
