Don't give up hope yet - I think everyone that's come here looking has managed to get one somehow. Keep checking eBay... There's also few people knocking around ideas to avoid the problem entirely, now that Stars! has finally become 'abandonware'...

Also, if you want to start practising in single player while you wait to find a 'good' code, there are some serials that can be found by searching the web, that will work with version 2.6i (these serials are all blocked in the 2.6j patches that are used here)
You can get 2.6i here http://starsautohost.org/kn2050.htm by downloading unregistered 2.6b, then applying all the incremental patches up to 2.6i. When you do manage to get a legit serial you can then start using the "2.6jrc4" patch. J isn't much different from I playwise (it mainly just prevents a few exploits) so your practice and race designing on I will be time well spent.

1.7 is way too old, there are very significant play differences between 1.x and 2.x versions.
You want 2.6 (shareware version) or 2.7 (retail version.) It doesn't matter which of these you use. 2.6 is downloadable from the link I gave above. Make sure you patch up to version 'i' (then 'jrc3' or 'jrc4' when you have a real key for multiplay.)

Then I'd recommend you find another one, as the time you spend practicing on that version won't help you much once you start playing with us on 2.6j after you get a real key.
If you are having trouble with your search, I'm sure you'll have more luck if you search the newsgroup (http://groups.google.com is an easy way to search the newsgroup.) There's an old post in there with a serial (that later got banned in the j patch, because this guy posted it...)
Like I said though, no good for multiplay, so buy a real serial as soon as you can find one so you can join one of the beginner games that seem to start up fairly regularly!

If you are still working on playing with games against the AI for practice and wish to get above the tech 10 barrier and examine different race creations, you can download 2.6i from the Autohost download section and your serial no. may work with it. However, you will not be able to play hosted games on AH since AH uses the j version.

It's also worth mentioning is that Autohost is not the only way to host Stars, so multiplayer games with the 2.6i patch is possible. Realistically, that probably limits you to duels (playing against one other person) because it would be hard to find a large number of players to play in a 2.6i or non-Autohost game.
I've been fighting a few duels against someone using 2.6i because he couldn't get a code.
Cheers,
Roy Ward.
