Sounds like something that would work.

And about those who wish to play some Single player games? to test, experiment, figure things out? (hehe like myself Very Happy )

But altho, yes, i could understand the concerns about trusting one person to keep a serial # confidential. I for one, just want to play this game to it's full potential, and get into playing with the community, and have no reason to spread a # around the world just so people play at another person's expense.

Well, if - say 16 of us - share serial numbers with new players the main risk is that they pass those serial nubers on to others or publish them on rile share... Then we have a hundred or more people using our serial number and when we want to play a game there is a risk that our game has been compromised. It would be much better if we can get new serial numbers allocated for sale at a minimal price. This way maybe the Jeffs get enough each year for a free case of beer or something...

...we would only need to collect 16 serials between us and we would be able to play without problems.

I'm ready to donate one of my two serials I got when I bought my copy of Stars!. In good shape, never used, but somewhat aged. Wink

I was thinking of writing my own autohost to host my modded games. For this, I was thinking of dynamically swapping out the serial in the .X files for one of 16 'good' serials (e.g. .X1 gets serial 1 etc.).

Alternatively, just disabling the copy protection in the EXE (although I am more reluctant to do this).

Such kind of arrangement would indeed be far more preferable.

I proposed something similar (named it a proxy) a little up the thread. This kind of approach would eliminate some peoples fear of having their serial numbers widely broadcasted if they allow unknown people to have them temporarily in order to be able to play. With the proxy or the swap-out approach those serials would stay in the hands of the trusted community and not be handed out to everyone.

But some people are trying to have the Jeffs issue more legit serials, and we should wait to see if they are successful first.

I'm sure there was a key generator in the wild at some point, but tracking that down now would be a task...

And finding it wouldn't help for games on Autohost anyway, as Autohost runs the j patch.

There used to be serial number generator and a list of serial numbers around (I think a web search would find some of those serials), but one of the j patches disabled all of those numbers. They work fine with the i patch though (i is like j, but with a few more bugs).

I'm curious as to where i could get this I patch, (yarrrr *stab*)
cause i know i can simply find one of those multi used serial numbers, till we can all figure out this whole mess.

>.< i just wana play past tech 10, and with a custom race! T.T (can already take over the small universe with nuclioids)

If you go to the Autohost Central Computer downloads you can download a full registered version of Stars! 1.10 which will allow you to play all the tech levels and create races. To get 2.6i you would need to apply one of the disabled serial numbers to the Stars! 2.6b version and then downlaod and run all the updates from the Central Computer page.

The link to the Central Computer page is: http://starsautohost.org/kn2050.htm

Or you can just download Stars v2.6i with 16 serials from here.

That won't help you play on autohost tho.
