There some beam ships headed toward a planet of mine, they are sweeping my mines but at the moment are grouped in a small fleet. Im thinking next turn they will split into multiple ships and come real close to my homeworld thus sweeping my mine field and making my planet vulernable for his main fleet.
Is there a way i can take them all out next turn? Obviously if i target my ships to his and they split only 1 will get taken out. But what if i use the automatic patrol feature? If i make enough patrols to equal the number of ships in his fleet then set them all to intercept everything in a 50ly radius, will it take out all his ships? (assuming he splits them of course)

Isnt there a tread about split-fleet-dodge somewhere?
Anyway...
Basically if he splits fleets, they are ordered by mass.
All of your fleets targeting a token at that point in space will be ordered by fleet number. Now they are matched according to this list, your lowest fleet number follows his heaviest fleet.
If you got more ships chasing than him splitting up the spare fleets will follow the heaviest fleet IIRC.
2 things here:
1.) your ships chase the token wich matches your battle order.
So if your fleet has order to chase bombers, and he splits off 100 chaff they wont be targeted!
2.) "the same point in space" means, that if he got 2 fleets there, one cloaked and one not cloaked, and you target the uncloaked fleet, which is split up, then maybe you follow the cloaded fleet even if you could not have seen it... spookey...
But something like that happenened to me once.

If you want to stop a fleet like this, don't try to intercept, go to where the fleet is going. In this case, place ships powerful enough to destroy 10 sweepers in each of the 9 places that the sweepers can go.
And next time, don't let them get so close.

This is a usefull tactic to keep in your toolbox, but don't rely on it - This tactic won't work against those that place their sweepers 2 or 3 ly outside the center of the field (either through laziness, or because they have predicted your move...)
As an example, I used this tactic myself recently to kill some sweepers, but after the first couple of kills it never worked again. It's quite a lot of MM for such a small gain.

Hm... IIRC it works only on the 4 north/south/west/east spots, the rest is 1.4 ly and the field will still be there...
Might be wrong still...

Just a note here:
If you target a fleet of 5 ships with 5 of your own and they split into 5 seperate fleets then your 5 ships will each be assigned a different fleet (JRC4). In this case since you are targeting 5 of the same type ships (sweepers), you should get them all. To be sure of what will happen it is useful to test it in a testbed.

The attacker may split his 5 fleets 3-4 ways with one fleet having 2-3 ships rather than 1 so it attracts more attention but retreats out of range. As well the attacker may randomly throw in an old missile boat cruiser to randomly defend one of his fleets or whatever it takes to give defender some fear.
