Hi,
I recently found my serial code for this game, but unfortunatley, I do not have the disc with me. Where can I get the trial demo to register? The http://stars.lelv30.net/ links to the demo do not work.

Thank you for the link, but isn't jrc4 just a patch?

I'm pretty sure stars26jrc4.zip is the full version ... I think that's where I got it from. That zip files doesn't contain the help file though.

If you don't get the full exe just PM me and I'll mail you a copy with the help file.

To register, you just have to feed in your serial code. If you're sure you typed it in correctly, then you code will be a blacklisted one. It will work with version i or less, but not j Sad Unfortunately this doesn't mean your code is illegal as I've heard of a few legit codes having this problem as well.

Edit: umm and make sure you have write access to c:\windows\ or whatever is your %windir% (where stars.ini is) because if you don't have write access then it can't record your serial code and you'll have to type it in each time...if this is the case its merely a hassle and doesn't affect gameplay at all...I used to run stars from uni like this just fine.

Keep in mind that the serial number is case sensitive. Mine has only capitol letters with a few numbers. Verify that you are typing in the serial code with correct case.

Thank you very much for sending me the game, Ptolemy.
As for the game, I punch in the code and it works. But I just don't like the idea of typing it in everytime I play, is there anyway I could fix this? How do I know if I have access to the 'ini' file?

After you have closed Stars!, look into your Windows dir. If there is a file called "stars.ini", you have write access. In this case, there must be another problem like a non-legit serial code.
I have typed (or copy&pasted) my serial every time for quite some time. It's not as annoying as you might think.

And in case you don't find a stars.ini file, create a solo game, gen a turn (hit F9 IIRC) and see if you get the ursurper messages ... if you do than you have a non-legit serial.

You could make a file with the serial number in it and paste it. If you have (or want) a macro app, you could automate starting Stars! and typing in the serial. Although, if you don't have access to write an ini file, you probably don't have access to install a macro app.

hehe I wouldn't worry about it too much...if he does need to type the code in each time, he'll memorise it within a week Laughing

It ended up being just another password I had to enter for me (I tend not to have the system remember them)

*sigh*... It appears I do have a non-legit serial code. I don't understand how this happened, as I've had the code for several years and never really shared it with anyone. In that case, how do I get a new serial code? Seeing as how the Stockmann Academic Bookstore is closed and its no longer being sold by Empire. Is my only option eBay?

Be aware that the serial numbers are case sensitive. Mine, for instance, is all upper case letters with a couple numbers. Make sure you're typing it in correctly.

I type it exactly as it appears, every small letter to every capitol, but it's now non-legit. Where can I buy this game now?

I'm wondering a little if any of the serials actualy used lower case at all (considering the fact that mine was all upper case). Try entering it all in upper case and see if you're problem goes away. As far as I know there aren't any places left to buy serial numbers. The Academic Bookstore is here where I live in Helsinki Finland. It certainly is not closed but, from what I've heard, they don't have any more serial numbers.

And if snoopreg doesn't want to buy it, I know someone who might (and doesn't want to pay the outrageous Ebay prices for a serial number that might not even work with the j patch).

I'm wondering if that would be a good sticky or forum to put somewhere - a market for the now limited supply of serial numbers - it's more likely though that Ron doesn't want to take the risk of getting caught in the middle if someone does something fraudulent.

If supply of Stars! serial numbers is limited, and if Jeff permits, is not it better to just open the Stars! from any registering in general, after limit is reached?

Also, I remember there was a key generator created by russian Stars! players. I wonder, why stock is limited, if new keys might be generated at easy??? Thats out of my understanding, or somebody really wants Stars! slowly die... Shocked
