TT-seems to me that since an -f race isn't trying to yank huge amounts of G from the ground as quickly as possible that building more mines than necessary to produce say, 1 BB/year is an unnecessary and wasteful expense. Does anyone have an opinion, pro or con, as to the validity of this?

Well, pilgrim, that depends on what the others are doing. If they are building 3 or more capital ships vs your one every year, what do you think will likely happen. Rolling Eyes
Speaking from current experience:
I am in a game as a -f race (2nd) and have fought with an ally (4th) against four, three, and now two (1st & 3rd), Thumbs Up races for quite some time. The time is in the Nubian era early 2520s and many of my planets have found first germanium and second iron to be in low supply on many planets. Thereby having to ship these minerals long distances to sustain warship production on many planets.
Also strong efforts have been made to recover salvage from big battles before the enemy does. The enemies have fallen behind in production probably because of less germanium. But also due to combat losses and slower production they are now almost outnumbered two to one and slowly slipping in stature.
My mining settings are 10/3/13 and I have twice the number of planets each of the opponents have so that accounts for extra minerals also. In order to keep a strong position the production has been about 3 Nubians from most planets every two years. The enemy has spent about 100,000kt+ minerals building chaff to counter the large missile fleets that were built in earlier years. That may have put a dent in his minerals also, he he he. Ten thousands of chaff might stop big fleets with missiles but they don't come free either.

PS You can trust the government. Just ask any Indian.

Also don't forget that you need minerals for MT's. While in theory -f races can (and do) get away with lower mine settings, lower them too much and you lose the freedom to design whatever ships you want and maybe to MT's.

Well.... yes it depends on the game...
if you spend the points you gained from factory settings into
wide habs, you will probably have many planets and so much mins,
and in the long game you will still have mins when the others
do not...

but if you want to go for a quick kill with a 1 in 800 resource
race you will need much early mins and dont have that many
planets later... hmm....

I play a -f PP in a very funny game with lots and efficient
mines, and need them to terraform the planets around me...
Sounds like a stupid idea, but i did survive to the nubian
time now, and i think i have more planets than anybody else
in the game... This race was designed to have some fun in
the early game, and i was surprised to come that far...

Well, it is an example for a -f race with strange mine settings,
but i think nobody is that stupid to play a -f TT PP Laughing
...except me...

well.....
in the end it really depends on the race... i think...

Robert

like robert says it belongs to the game , and to the other players taktiks in the game .

Normaly I play CA with 12/3/10-15 they get so many planets
you need no better use .

And when your race have lower Planets to take you need more mines or a better us of mines , maybe improved mining will help also .

But like you can not say what the best race is . You can not tell what the best settings are , it belongs to your races and you play taktics .

For exampel if you play a slow growing HE (8% after double)
minesettings 23/3/25
in a lage game you will lose if a WM is near to you and atacks you the first 20-40 years . ( If the WM can play and is set to fast atack )

If you played the same race in a lage univers and have peace the first 60-80 years and a lage nummber of planets ( and the time to make your turns later Wink ) you have always a good chance to win.

Ah well, another great theory laid low by mundane reality Sad

Tried some testbeds with some of your suggested settings and I suspect that I'm going to wind up staying with my old settings.

As Always, Thank You all so much for the input and advice and (most especially) for keeping the giggling down to a dull roar Rolling Eyes

ps: (sorry Ron, but I'm building more mines)

Question I hope you're not saying that I'm one of those... Just because I run Stars! AutoHost and got you hooked on the game doesn't mean I'm good at playing it. Very Happy
