You CAN run both versions on the same computer. A serial number that is accepted but j will be accepted by i as well. You just need to pay attention to which executable you're running. I have stars26i.exe and starsjrc4.exe both in the same directory, but with separate shortcuts. (I also have shortcuts for each game using the commandline parameters)

I have done so in the past. IIRC you need to rename at least one of one of them. I believe I renamed one to starsi.exe and the other to starsj.exe and had appropriate links from my desktop. You just need to use the corect one for each game. Ofc you can use command line instructions to associate the appropriate game to the corresponding i or j exec along with the passwords to make life easier.
Let us know if it works. Tried to test it myself but am out of home country and was unable to download the i patch from starsfaq page.
