OT: You have PEOPLE on your warships! How barbaric and embarassing! All my warships are of course fully automated, if there were people on them they wouldn't act so stupidly! Twisted Evil

I think I've seen your warships.

Do they have a big "Windows" logo on the side of them? Very Happy

Yeah that's them! Laughing There's an Intel Inside decal on the other side of the ship.

"What's wrong number one?"
"Sir... there's a problem with the jump back to homeworld.."
"What is the nature of this problem? Surely it's a simple navigational calculation?"

If we consider the RNA and DNA scanners, it seems like every ship is manned by crew and not automated, otherwise they could avoid those scanners.

I've never understood the naming of the DNA & RNA scanners. They require biotech, so maybe they are biomechanical, but several other scanners also require biotech. The biotech scanners tend to be penetrating, but neither the DNA or RNA scanners are penetrating, and neither is the Pickpocket. OTOH, the Chameleon is penetrating, but does not require biotech.

If you wish to insist that all races in Stars are DNA/RNA based, then perhaps the DNA/RNA scanners are scanning for residue? But really, there are no sentient beings in charge of my ships, I mean would sentient beings make the decisions that my ships make? I think not.

I don't think you can lend much credence to the functionality of components based on their names....

After all, Stars! is based on fuzzy astrophysics at best.... Cool

I think RNA and DNA are just used as nice names. Trademark thing. Its always like this, fuzzy astrophysics or no.

There are 3 scanners whose name makes sense: Pick Pocket, Robber Baron and Peerless.

Rest of scanner trademarks got very meaningless names. Similarily... from real world ... room-eater software is always MicroSoft Something? Wink

You could say that the DNA/RNA scanners are based on organic technology for their mechanisms and logic, whereas all the other scanners are based (mostly) on conventional electronics based technologies. Hence they are named by their component parts, not their abilities.

Of course this inevitably leads the question of exactly how many elephants can you fit in a frigate, anyway... (Or if you take the opposite understanding - why is it useful to scan for them?) Very Happy

If you need Elephant scanners for that reason, you are flying way to low...I use Pterodactyl scanners myself. Razz

Yes, the elephants *shouldn't* be up there, should they?? Mad

Well now, let's see.

I don't know anywhere that Stars! references DNA or RNA scanners as detecting biological entities. If I use them to scan a ship of robots they still scan the ship. I believe that the RNA stands for Real Nucleonic Anti-matter scanner and the DNA stands for Dynamic Nucleonic Anti-matter scanner. At least this is what my scientists tell me. According to them, the biology research requirement was necessary to achieve stable biological cells capable of generating renewable anti-matter containment fields to allow the controlled escape of subatomic particles from the anti-matter reactions - these particles are actually what are used to detect ships in space.

If anyone has different information, I would welcome hearing it.

As one of the primary users of DNA and RNA scanners, I would like to set the record straight. (My races use bio scanners more than elect ones)

DNA and RNA scanners are sort of "alive" just like organic armour, that is why they need bio tech. Rather than detecting bio, they ARE biological... organic computers and sensors built/grown similar to the cells in your body.

In appearance they look like honey cones in a beehive, hex shaped with a thin carbon shell around each protecting from the vacuum of outer space, and from damage to neighbouring hex shaped units.
