As player & host for Critical Mass & No Impact respectively, both games designed for the exact same purpose, tho at diffferent ability levels I can say that 24hr at the start worked fine, altho we switched to 5 turns a week at 2430 and I personally(and serveral of my players) found it a bit of a strain towards the end, the same problem occured at 2460 when we switched to 3 turns a week.
The difference between these games and this game is that in my games the universe size and density were reduced to allow less planets per player and thus reduce management time rather than limiting player numbers. No Impact grew to have a relatively high nuber of player and consequently a medium universe, it will be interesting to see once players begin to drop out if the intended effect still holds. Critical Mass ended up at tiny dense and even with that I found the pressure to submit a struggle at times.(Most probably my own fault for choosing HE tho)
If you can find 3 good players I think you should be able to make it work well. I would switch to 48hr gens as soon as 1/2 the players (2) ask for it tho, rather than specifying a game date.

No worries. Fire away!

- This game is mentioned for beginners and I believe chaff could complicate situation a lot.

Yes, it could. Chaff definately makes things more interesting, but it is certainly not an end all to everything. IMO, it forces people to stop relying on just missile ships, and learn how to create balanced fleets. I have played against players who clearly had no idea how to create balanced fleets, and instead relied on missile ships almost exclusively. No idea if this was because of no chaff games, but I have my suspicions...

- I lack experience. But from what I know I somewhat doubt that something like chaff can make Stars! better / more interesting. I know other games where "cannon fodder" ships make great difference, and the cause is the same - wrong (is I believe it is) game code. Perhaps I'll change my mind in the future...
|
This goes beyond the thread... While it may be a coding error, it really does make sense. Chaff is employed against modern day missles. No reason to think this will change. Makes more sense than overlapping shields do, that's for sure. Realize that most chaff won't last past round 2, maybe 3, unless you are not prepared.

Global Warming - A climatic change eagerly awaited by most Minnesotans.

Another thing worth noting about chaff in Stars! is that it was noticed and reported as a bug several versions ago and the developers have made no efforts to remove it at all. It was potentially deliberate. They do like RPS(rock paper scizzors) loops.

I've got an answer from Ron Miller and he informed that he has a slot for our game and we can send him the game files.
At the moment I have got 4 race files, and I need a race file from Strannik to say that there are at least 5 players in the game.
I will wait till the weekend for the 6th player to join the game. At the weekend I'll send game files to Autohost, no matter if we get the 6th player.
Of course, if there are only 5 players, the game starts being somewhat "intriguing". In this case I'm thinking of increasing a number of player per alliance up to 3, but still leave only two races possible to be declared victorious. But I'm afraid this won't help balance the game very much.
If we get the 6th player, then I'll change universe density to normal, instead of sparse. We also would get a potentially much more balanced game in that case.
That's how it is going for now. Any questions and/or wishes, welcome. As I mentioned before, race files are to be sent to saguaro(at)inbox.ru
Best regards,
Pavel.
