Hello all.

It seems I've run into a massive wave of pauses in my active games. #### happens, but it made me remember an old series that used to run here or at usenet: 'Speed' (AFAIR). The concept is crazy, but could be interesting and should at least provide a relief for impatient persons like myself.

The idea is to make a game of such fast pace that noone can possibly fill in every turn of the game. It will be necessary to make multi-year orders and it will be possible to launch a major campaign against someone who may be asleep. Forget about fairness - he'll do the same to you...

I'm offering to host (and play) in the game described below.

XTREME SPEED
============
- # of players: up to 12.
- Galaxy size: up to 4: small normal, 5-8 medium normal, 8-12 medium dense.
- No clumping (or else backstabbing might be easier)
- Slower tech advances (needed to prevent too much techjumping)
- PPS on (since the usual time available to asses enemy strength is hardly available)
- GENERATING SCHEDULE: every 4 hours (if SAH allows, does anyone know?).
- PRT restrictions: Joat, IS, CA, SD and IT may not take NAS, thank you.
- Standard ban on cheats. Chaff and split fleet is not considered cheating.
- Only one winner by consent or last player standing. Alliances are allowed (since there's no effective way of preventing them anyway), but please do not ally or cooperate too early. No alliance win possible.

Gameparameters may be subject to change - including suggestions from those signing up here. The only thing that won't change is the generating schedule. It'll be as short as possible down to 4 hours.

Hi!

Very, very nice idea!
Laughing

You might want to think about giving one 24hr period in every week off so that people can have a shower, take the wife out for a walk and talk to the dog.

I know it runs a little contrary to the general idea of the game, but you might find more people willing to join. Especially if you put the 'pause' in the middle of the week and not on the weekend.

I'd be interested, sounds like fun to try something different.

You're right AE. A break once a week (sunday) may be a good idea anyhow.

But is it possible at AH to combine a weekly day set to nogen with the rest of the week set to gen every X hours? I'd hate to have to sit up till midnight saturday just to put the game on hold. Cool

No, you can either gen every x hours or you can follow a schedule (gen at one certain hour a day, strict or non strict) with possibly free days.

Hi!

As I said, I think a break during the week might be better - most people tend to have a little more time during the weekend. And they might want to spend that playing Stars.

Micha has answered your question already. A work-around might be to set a four-hour-schedule, and then change it once a week after the last turn has genned before the day of rest (let's say it is Sunday). On Saturday at 20:00 (8 PM) you change the schedule to 28 hours. This would mean the next turn is genned on Sunday at 24:00.

Of course, if you go for this solution, you'd have to reset the schedule to four-hourly after the break. So you sit up until midnight on Sunday.
Laughing

Solution: Sunday at 20:00, you change the schedule to 4 hours...

Doesn't really make life any easier for you.

But that's what being a host is all about!

Errr... One other thing:

Why are you banning NAS for CA and IS and not for SS?

Just a guess: JoaT, CA and IT because they're strong already without the extra points from NAS, SD and IS because they have the most RW points, and not SS because it's not a point mine for them (I think it will even cost them when already more LRTs?) ...

Edit: heh, only the last part is probably an answer to your question. Smile

If he doesn't mind leaving his puter on-duty and the steps involved are not too complicated he might write a sort of macro and use a timer to make the necessary changes on autohost.

AE: almost any game I see here have week ends off. I take that as an indication that most players would prefer a break in the week end. But I'm flexible with that and I'll take it up with those who sign up for the game.

The options on AH as Micha explains speaks in favour of a weekday break, though.

Micha: you're right. The no NAS condition was a simpel way to try and handicap the strongest PRTs. In my experience there's far too little mix in the PRTs in MP games (hardly ever AR, PP or HE in non-team games). And in stead of setting a certain RW point as handicap for every PRT (whiny-whiny:'IS should have -48 points - not -49!'), I chose the simple option of banning NAS for those races. I have nothing against penscans Smile

NO: I think Ron did a lot to prevent outside interference with AH so I deem that option unlikely. My best bet is to put the pause somewhere where I have a reasonable chance to administer it (ie. midday).

Purely by accident...I discovered the minimum gen time for AH is 1 hour!!...tho I suspect that might be a tad fast...even for you...

Yes. Unless everyone has an entire weekend to spend, that'd certainly be too short an interval.

It does remind me of a true story, however: there was this one playing gamehost in a game I was in, who really did his best to violate all the hosting ethics. Ia. by flaming players he didn't like. Rolling Eyes

The game ended in a massive argument with accusations of cheating and misconduct and a number of players dropped around 2480ish. Then the host put the game at 1 hour forced generation.

Next morning, I woke up to find my e-mail flooded with ever growing turn files (when you skip a turn, messages etc. are accumulated). Some turn files were over 1mb, which was quite a lot by those 28.8 modem days. And AH ofc. had been totally bogged down by the massive turn generation of some 12-16 players turn files, each building up and growing 1mb+ size every hour. Shocked

Update:

This game was first announced 1 week ago. However, so far only 3 players signed up, so I'll leave this open for at least another week.

GAME CANCELLED.

OK, there's very little interest in this game.

I'll let it die right there. Thanks to those who signed up, sorry about the cancellation, but there's no point in this if there is not at least a handfull of players. Crying or Very Sad

I think there were 2 or 3.

I put the idea to the test and it turns out it doesn't have a lot of appeal. So it should die. It's fair enough and there's no real reason to mourn it. Plenty of other games around.
