I'd like to host a new STARS! game (version 2.7JRC3).

THIS GAME IS ONLY FOR BEGINNERS ... people that has never played a multiplayers game or people with only very few multiplayers games played please ...

The game's goals are to learn how to play and to HAVE FUN; believe me ... a multiplayers game is more challenging and interesting than a solo game against
the computer ... also the fun factor is a lot higher of course!

GAME NAME: AT THE BEGINNING
NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 16 ALL HUMANS - NO AI
UNIVERSE SIZE: HUGE
DENSITY: PACKED
PLAYER POSITIONS: DISTANT
OPTIONS: ACCELERATED BBS PLAY, PUBLIC PLAYER SCORES
VICTORY CONDITIONS: AT ANY POINT AFTER YEAR 2500, THE REMAINING PLAYERS MAY MUTUALLY AGREE AS TO THE WINNER.

ALL PRT ARE ALLOWED!

NO PREGAME ALLIANCES!

HOST WILL PLAY.

Trade, diplomacy, technology exchange and alliances are permitted and encouraged.
Only the following cheats are allowed:

- CHAFF
- SPLIT FLEET DODGE

Other cheats are not allowed and the player using them will be banned.
Inactive players or players leaving the game will be replaced by AI.

I'll host the game from my home using a utility called STARPOWER.
The game will be generated dayly (all days) at 13:20 local time here in Italy;
if you want to alter the generation schedule let me know ... we can generate less frequently after 30 years for example ... or we can skip weekends ... simply let me know, and I'll arrange it.
I can also generate the first 20 years in a single generation cycle.

If you are interested send me your race file (PASSWORD PROTECTED) and, as soon as I'll reach 16 players, the game starts.
PLEASE NOTE THAT A GAME LIKE THIS NORMALLY LASTS SOME MONTHS ...so be prepared to play for a long time otherwise, please, choose another game.

My Email address:

r.silvaSS@alice.it

(remember to leave out SS from the address above)

Thanks in advance!

Roberto

I think long time includes long time for every TURN, especially for beginners who haven't figured out how to reduce micromanagement time.

Suggest either players who sign up take a break from real life for 6 months or more to play game full time (many hours a day), or perhaps host reduce number of planets in universe.

Even Medium/Normal can be time grabbing by the end of the game, I suspect huge/dense will overwhelm rather than fun for most newbies.

I have already played and hosted games like this in the past ... normally they lasted about 3-4 months; asking to the players how many time they needed in order to playing their turns when the games were in the middle-end range, almost all answered 1 hour, 1 hour and half; the same applied to me.
At that stage we had wars, alliances etc ... the games were not boring.

Anyway, because the winner can't be declared before 2500, 3 months are the mininum ... maybe I can generate, if the players agree, the first 20 years in a single generation cycle.

Huge, packed, with beginners, over in 3-4 months?

I don't believe it. I'll bet it was over because you had over half the players drop out and the game ended due to lack of interest in continuing, instead of due to some kind of resolution.

Just my 2 knuts.

I am interested in this game, but I think, that it is hard to found 16(15) newbie players, maybe better reduce to 8-10 player and large (maybe even medium) galaxy. Maybe the voting should reveal the truth;).

In the past, when I hosted similar games, I found that many players were not beginners ... for lacks of games, many of them were intermediates or even experts; when the games started, after few turns, clearly I was able to recognize the real beginners, from the more expert ones.
So, also this time, I thought that almost all type of players could be answer to the call.
About the universe size, my idea was simple:
- for a real beginner, having time (for example) to develop his empire, having time to discover how the remote mining works, how to terraform, how to research, etc ... WITHOUT HAVING TO DEAL WITH ONE OR MORE AGRESSIVE PLAYERS near to him, it can really be useful; you have time to try, discover errors, new tactics, without to be in hurry fighting an enemy.
BTW, an huge universe seems large, but in a relative short number of turns, you'll find other players ... so it is not so large as you can think.
In the past I had no problem with this size ... yes, some players dropped from the games, but this occours almost in all games for variuos reason.
This is based on my personal past experiences as a host and as a player ... but are sensations of mine.

Anyway, if I don't reach the desired number of players, I can arrange a small game as a players and as a universe size.

Really, I think we have a problem here about what is understood under the concept "newbie" or beginner in Stars!, and it is becoming increasingly annoying and frustrating not to have it all put into black and white for everyone to take note of (those who bother anyway).

I recently took over for a dropout in a newbie game, and if things do not get sorted out the right way soon, I will have to withdraw from the game in order to keep my mental sanity and honour intact.

As far as I know, a newbie or beginner in Stars! is someone about to play its first few games against human players. Period.

Some other kind of "newbie" or beginner could be thaught of as someone that needs assistance in turning every one of the first pages of the stars manual, or that thinks he can face human opponents in his first game ever without ever challenging the AI and gaining some "experience".

Clearly, those two kinds of "beginners" are not meant to share the same games, and allowing this to happen is not doing the stars community any good.

Stars! comes with a fine handbook and a yet to be beaten tutorial, and those that prove by their facts that they have not bothered going through both and to know what they can expect from playing against human opponents do not deserve to be playing and ruin the game for everybody else.

Having real newbies think they are in the wrong game because authentic zeros do not match minimally required basic knowledge is not the way to increase the available player pool. Their next try will be against far too experienced players, and apart from ruining that game too for the experienced players, they probably wont give it a third try, abandoning definitively.

Just one more comment before you tear the above mentioned to pieces following your particular philias and phobias:

I am in my second game against humans ever. The first one I was a replacement jumping in around 2500 for a ruined dropout. This one I am a replacement jumping in around 2465 for a second place player. The first one was clearly a total zero-level one, and this one is rapidly showing the same kind of situation with a few real newbies thinking they are far too experienced to have joined here. In both I take over an inherited race design and situation and try to make it into the best I can with my present knowledge, which being humble certainly is not equal to zero. I yet have to design and play my own race from the start in any human game.

Just my my 2 cents and my headache, if it can be of any interest.

The "expert" AI opponents are very interesting and deadly for described gameplay skill level. Check "AI-s form alliances" checkbox and there is lot of fun for couple of weeks.

Most interesting games i have been in were with size small normal up to medium dense and where only sole player may be declared the winner. Feeling of growded universe, negotiations, threats, disloyalty, paranoia, betrayals etc. These are the key funmaking elements of multiplayer stars game. If new player gets his empire destroyed within first month of gameplay then he is lot more satified than sitting and yawning there 3 months as weakest member of his big alliance.

Totally agreed. And in 1 month time everybody will have learned a lot and give some more head in their next game.

"Seattle Brew"? I must admit ignorance concerning local expressions of places far beyond my physical reach.

Anyway, it does not make much fun if you have to purposely ignore any sense of perspective and relativity to make a laugh. If it was ever done on purpose, that is.

Thanks for being worried, but your answer was indeed respectful enough. I just got the impression the next addenda were heading towards a situation where I might get forced to respond something unpleasant myself, and I decided to abort the issue before I was left no choice.

I have played a couple games with one or two human players, but I have never finshed a game or played a game of this size. My friend vonKreedon said this would be a good game for me if it was medium dense.

How many players do we have to date?
Would it be possible to go with "Max Minerals?" This would cut down on the micro management. If this is going to be a Huge Universe then we could use all the help we can get.
One more thing: Do we have to use public player scoring? If I'm going to go down, I'd rather it was from a hard-fought war then embarrassment. Embarassed

At the moment we are 14 players and the game should start at the end of this week.
I agree about the not using Public Player Score (but I have to ask to all the players) but I strong disagree about using Maximum Minerals ... remember that this game as objectove has to learn how to mining, how to trade, how to manage resources and minerals etc ...

The universe will be huge and packed.
