Hi all,

I am offering to host my first game.

# of players: up to 8
Skill level: Intermediate
Ranked: Yes. Please tell me if you are not ranked yet.
Version: 2.6/2.7j
Autohost: Yes
Turns generated: 24 hours up to year 2430, then 48 hours. Weekends off. If you need a pause, just ask the host.
Host is playing: Observer Race
Universe size: Small Packed, Distant Starting Positions
Starting conditions: ACC BBS
Victory conditions: Last Man Standing or consensus
PRTs forbidden: None, but there will be a penalty of 100 leftover points for CA (set to defenses) plus they may not take TT. JOAT may not take NAS.
Restrictions:
- no cheats (except chaff and split-fleet dodge)
- no pregame alliances

Special Rules:
Germ starting concentration will be 30 or lower.
Everyone has to be set to enemy except one ally (and observer race of course). The ally can be changed once every 10 years. Tech exchange between enemies is not allowed (I'll be watching!).

If you are interested, please send a race file, the password and your desired email address to me at andreas (at) studnitz (dot) de. First come, first serve.

The game is intended to start in about two weeks.

Regards,
Andreas / wizard

Im interested in your game but have one comment.

First why the NAS restriction for JOAT? I can understand TT for CA since it can really overpower them. But at level 10 electronics the JoAT's inate scanners are no better than regular level 10 penetrating scanners and at level 16 elec they are effecitivly obsolete as the Dolphin scanner has a penetrating range of 200ly while the JoAT will only have 160ly. Ya their normal scanners will be a bit better but seeing some fleet 640ly away isnt too useful if you cant see it planet hopping to you a few turns away. In addition the Elephant scanner can be stacked. In fact putting 3 on a frigate hull will get you a penetrating scanner range of 263ly, a range that JoAT wont get until level 26.

I dont know it just seems whatever bonus the JOAT gets at the beginning from the pen scanners is easily outweighed by the disadvantages later. I know cause im in a game where im JOAT now and my opponents are able to get some of the best scanners in the game at level 16 while i wont have anything nearly as equivlant until level 26 Sad

BTW im not going to be JOAT if i join your game. Just wanted to point out that i dont think that restriction is really necessary.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly ... in this game JoaT can not take NAS, that means he'll have all the penscanners available ...

As for JoaT and NAS, taking NAS for a JoaT is free points! (Therefor the restriction, an already powerful PRT gets even more RW points.) You get penscans anyway, they are indeed not as good as elephants but they cost you nothing compared to those. Also next to keeping penscans you get the double NAS range as well ...
I don't have Stars! at hand but for the cost of one FF with 5 elephants (each costing what? 70 resources?) you might be able to build 35 or so chaff (each costing +/-10 resources) and have 35 penscan ships with a very decent range ... you'll see a lot more with those 35 ships than just one expensive FF ...

And penscans from turn 2400 is not to be underestimated ...

Well most people disagree with that one.
The early advantages are enormous, and the later disadvatages are trifling.

The JoaT gets it's scanners for free.
Everyone else has to pay for Dolphins and Elephants and most people don't get to Dolphins until the start of the mid-game when most of the initial borders have been settled.
Every minelayer/scout/DD sweeper becomes a high powered scanning ship.
Plus, if they take NAS then they get 100 extra points to improve their race.

This has been discussed many, many times before.
In return for a massive number of points, and doubling of the non-penscan range JoaTs only lose a few minor benefits - like not being able to build cloaked, scanning nubs.
This is considered one of the most broken things in the Race Wizard.

Quote:

I know cause im in a game where im JOAT now

In that case you aren't using the JoaT scanning correctly.

Thanks Micha and mazda. That's what I wanted to achieve. Advanced Scanners may be a bit better, but the JOAT scanning ability is still very good. So it's unfair that JOAT gets even points for taking NAS. JOAT is strong enough...

Maybe allow player to have JoAT with NAS if he leave 100 points to defenses like CA?

Greets,

2 days ago I stumbled upon my old Stars!-files, did some fast games vs the AIs, discovered as usual how boring it is crushing AIs and...
if there is still a free slot I would be delighted to be in.

It's quite some time since I've played Stars, several years really, but I did some multi-player games back then (Bluebear's beginners' games, interim, relax, sniper school) and would place myself somewhere at the lower intermediate skill-level.

Ranked? I don't think so. You have developed a ranking within the games played here?

Nevertheless an email with my data and race file is on the way...

Hi all,
Special Rules:
Germ starting concentration will be 30 or lower.

Forgot to ask:
Does the Germ concentration of 30 or lower refer to just the HWs or all planets in the galaxy?

Only to the HWs (as they are all the same, except if you spend points in min cons), rest of the planets is random.

Okay, we'll get it going. The following players are in up to now:

Jan
Skaven
sarducci
Altruist
Hillel
Aaron
Robert (No, not the forum robert, another one).

I'd like the above players to send me their race files until Thursday (if not already done so). Also, I need Jan and Robert to tell me their forum login names. I'll set up the game when I got all race files, and hope to send the files to Ron this weekend.
Also, I'll get the players ranked who aren't yet.
There is still one slot open. If you are interested, just send a race file, the first to do so is in. I'll post if someone not on the list has sent a race file.

My email address again: andreas(at)studnitz(dot)de.

Hello all!

I am on. Unfortunatly, I wasn't able to come here any earlier. My real name is Jan (first on the list).

I have played some multi player games with medium success, though not on Autohost. So no ranking upto now.

I have one Question concerning the game rules: What does changing you Ally once in ten years mean? May I change only in years with say 0 as last digit, or does it mean, I can change every time, provided the last change was more than 10 years in the past. Furthermore, do I have to anounce my ally to all players or only to the observer race (and maybe to the ally). Cool

That's about all.

Good luck to all other participants!

Hi Indur,

thanks for your message Smile
You may only change your ally if you didn't change it for the last 10 years. And you don't have to announce it, although it would be nice if you tell the host (me) about it.

Have fun Wink

Just wondering what the players should do in turn 1 ... Set everyone to enemy immediately? Or everyone neutral unless you have met the race? Or ... ?

Set everyone to enemy, except observer race of course. If players want, they can set one race to friend, but remember that there must be 10 years until you can set another race to friend (and the former ally to enemy).

I'll check that from time to time.

Does that mean that you can only set your ally to enemy after 10 years? Or can you set your friend to enemy anytime as long as you set nobody else to friend for the next 10 years?

You may set anyone to enemy whenever you want. There is only a restriction on setting allies: you may only set someone to friend if
- there is noone else set to friend and
- you haven't set someone else to friend (who hasn't been before) in the last 9 years

I think you know what I mean. Don't switch friends more often than every ten years. Please tell me if there is still need to clarification. I can make some pseudo code formula Smile

Hi Akapulko,

currently, all eight slots are filled. Still, three of the players haven't sent a race file yet.
If you sent a race file, I'll put you on the waiting list. If there are still race files missing, you'll be in then instead.
