is there any way of editing the graphics in stars! ?

I believe someone figured out how to do it yes. There are threads around here somewhere about it, possiblely in the VML lounge. I believe they had a problem with it - that the pictures are only changed for you and not for everyone who plays (they'd need thier pictures modified too) but I don't recall it affecting the ret of the game at all.

Actually, it's very easy to edit the Stars! graphics. Each graphic is stored in a bitmap table inside the .exe. If you load the Stars! exe in the Microsoft C resource workshop, all the graphics are available to edit.
