i remember to have read about something like ship's
weight is altered randomly by +/- 10% or so when move order
in battle is calculated.

is this true?

so it is of no use to taylor my range-3 beamer design to
be 1kT lighter than the range-2 beamer of the enemy???

if it is true, is it calculated for each battle or for
each round in a battle?

for each stack, or for each design?

anybody some idea?

Yes, that's true (close enough).

Unfortunately, that 1kt less will not result in the desired effect. Unless the difference in weight between 2 designs is a certain %-amount (which is, IIRC, >10%), Stars! treats the 2 designs just as if they had the same weight. In that case, you'll see the battle "randomized".

AFAIK, the "virtual" weight difference is assigned per design and per battle, meaning that it affects all stacks in a single battle. You may have another battle elsewhere the same turn, where just the other design is assigned the "last move advantage".

So, unless you can make sure your design is at least 10% lighter than your enemies, you better spend additional resources or design slots on something else.

BTW, don't forget his r2 beams will usually fire before your r3 ones, once in range (given your designs have the same initiative).

thanks for the quick answer...

but one thing i am not sure about:
does the "lower range fires first" rule apply at beams only?

i did a test once, but not with ship vs ship...

i figured out that with same initiative sometimes jihads on
a base fired first, and somtimes jihads on a BB.
but the jihad on the base have higher range... still fired
first some times...

how is the "base bonus" calculated?

or is the "lower range fires first" rule just a "mythos"???

i can not confirm it works!

i just did a quick test with 2 destroyers,
one with range 3 colly and SBC, making it heavier
than the range 2 bazoka...

both ships have same ini

i did 10 battles (all the same year) and it was
random who fired first!!!

try it - it is just not true, that low range fires
before short range...

Wink

What Verker meant is that r2 beams have higher init than r3.
Therefore will usually fire first once in range.

Stay on the safe side....

Make your ship+15% mass less than their ship-15% mass.

Or just go the whole hog and build range 3 hordes of frigates.... and i mean hordes. They double use as chaff and they rip up bigger beamers because they're so light.

Granted.. they get hurt easy and hard but it's worth it.

In one game I'm still in the majority of my fleets are frigate based and they've been doing damned well... even against big starbases never mind BB's and DN's.
