Hi,

I thought some people will find this useful:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.games.computer.stars /about?hl=en

For those who haven't seen it before, it apparently harbors everything that was ever posted to the rgcs newsgroup, and is searchable. Try searching "Cawley", for example. Very Happy

Yeah. There's good stuff there. Problem with archive is that there are different versions of stars so some knowledge is obsolete.

Surprised you hadn't seen this before? I thought everybody knew about google groups (and DejaNews).

I guess web boards are killing of USENET.

Well, there's more on usenet, but also it depends on moderation. If there's no moderation you'll get spam whether it's a newsgroup or a web board.

The problem of usenet is that it never evolved and web boards provide more functionality. I always hoped that google would provide that missing functionality.

That is how our universe is made. Its called evolution. Old constantly die and new constantly born. First there are people who mourn dead old ... later they forget too. For example i have not seen someone weeping for GOPHER lately. Very Happy

well nobody used gopher to begin with Wink

but the good thing with usenet is that it's archived and distributed. i can always go back to find something in archives (well, so long as google still archive it).

i've seen a few boards go down and take all the info with it...

How so? Not so old times when there was no HTML gopher was the sole way to read something over net. That Mosaic web browser was made only about 11 years ago so i think majority of current stars players were already hatched back then. Very Happy People just forget. Nod

Arguably, web boards provide *less* functionality. Or at least, different functionality. Usenet is a distributed store and forward network that allows you to connect with an arbitrary client and do what you will with the content. Versus the centralized "all or nothing" web boards (if the web board goes down it's *down* - archives like the Internet Wayback Machine are spotty at best, painful to search through, etc.) IMO, no web board has come close to the usability of Usenet...

On the other hand, web boards allow much tighter editorial control - both for the poster and the moderator(s). This has certainly become increasingly important with the ever increasing prevalence of spam.

Discussion branching is by far the option I miss the most. While it isn't to horrific if people quote specific parts of a discussion in their posts, it can be very tough to follow branches if they don't. At times it seems like stream of conciousness, or a multiple personality disorder with all personalities talking at the same time.
