I have not seen this happen and I play Star's under XP. First, I recommend you uninstall the game then, search the XP registry for any occurance ot Stars and delete the registry entries.
After that, re-install Stars and start it. Use your OWN legal serial number and it should work OK. Keep in mind that if you are playing in a game where both computers are using the same serial number, one of the computers will probably pick it up as being illegal.

As I remember from previous HWF, in the past a different user had the same problem, and apparently the end result was his legit serial problem was part of 'blacklist' likely because others cracked same number out were using it. He somehow got it exchanged for a good number.

Yeah, since there are only 4.2 billion classes of serial, the chances of collision are relatively high. Do empire still exchange serials? It's a pretty messed up SW protection scheme, but I'm glad it isn't CDKEY.
