 Has anyone ever encountered a problem with Stars! not saving the serial number it is given? The computer being used has a fresh copy of Windows XP (in fact, the PC was setup almost exclusively to play Stars) with no internet connection... the game requests a new serial every time you start it, and wrecks every turn taken (with messages such as "The people think you are a usurper and have lost 20% production" and "Your ships refuse to move because they question your rule" ...

I have tried using both my own legal serial and many not-so-legal serials.
I really can't find any reason for this to be taking place... help, before my brother throttles me for not being able to play Stars!

 I have not seen this happen and I play Star's under XP. First, I recommend you uninstall the game then, search the XP registry for any occurance ot Stars and delete the registry entries.

After that, re-install Stars and start it. Use your OWN legal serial number and it should work OK. Keep in mind that if you are playing in a game where both computers are using the same serial number, one of the computers will probably pick it up as being illegal.

 Could be that you are using different users? That the user that wants to use Stars! doesn't have rights to write in the windows dir where the stars.ini is ... ?
Could maybe be checked by making some custom orders and see if they are still there after closing/opening the game?

That would be my assumption too. I am sometimes using a computer where I have no access to c:\windows, so stars.ini can't be written. I have to insert my serial every time...

Question: do you get "ursurper" messages as well if you try to gen on that computer?

Blacklisted serials will be accepted but not stored and it will ask you again next time you restart.

True, but he got the usurper message which suggests he is using the blacklisted one for that (or using legal on 2 different computers).

 As I remember from previous HWF, in the past a different user had the same problem, and apparently the end result was his legit serial problem was part of 'blacklist' likely because others cracked same number out were using it. He somehow got it exchanged for a good number.

Yeah, since there are only 4.2 billion classes of serial, the chances of collision are relatively high. Do empire still exchange serials? It's a pretty messed up SW protection scheme, but I'm glad it isn't CDKEY.

 If it is a legit serial problem....you might want get in touch with Empire Interactive........exlpain your situation and they might just give in...Smile

But then again, reading the original post, you said that you are trying it on a fresh install of XP....eh....So does that mean you have used the same serial on a previous installation of windows???

If yes...its an OS problem ........i guess...
