Im looking for someplace to get the 2.0 version of Stars! I've been scouring the net, but I can only find the 2.5+ version. Apparently no one sells the older version anymore. Does anybody know where I can find it?
Feel free to e-mail me if you want.

Why would you want version 2.0? Also, there were several variants of 2.0 IIRC (a,b,c). None of them are in the downloads sections Micha pointed you too.

I like it better-- and mostly, I've got several games started a long time ago in the 2.0 demo, and I'd like to continue them being able to use higer tech levels. I've read that you can use a game previously started in the demo version and continue it in the registered version.
I had already checked out the download section here, as well as the places that sell 2.5+, and I haven't been able to find it.

The only difference between a registered shareware version and the equivalent retail version is that the retail version has some sound effects which most people turn off, and which have been known to crash computers on occasion.
|
No, we are talking about the unregistered shareware demo vs Registered Shareware (or at least I am). At the time of 2.0b, you could not buy the commonly named "Retail" version... Empire happened later.
Quote: | You don't need a "retail version" of v2.0 if you already have a demo version of v2.0, as the demo version of v2.0 is the shareware version, without a SN (serial number). What you need is a legal SN.

No. There was a distinct difference between the Demo and the real versions. At that time, you needed to mail or call to order the product. I know, as that is how I got my copy around '96... For further clarification, you can read McBrides post on this here:

The question then is, can a SN for v2.7 be used with v2.0 ?
|
Good question. I assume so, but maybe not. I know my SN works for the older versions, but the "retail" SN's may not.
