This is the only way I know of expressing my sorrow at this mornings shuttle disaster.

From one ex-serviceman to those that died in the service of mankind exploring the Stars!

They shall grow not old
As we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them

LEST WE FORGET

Space exploration is dangerous, period, but also very beneficial to medicine and technology. As one astronaut put it, "It's not like driving a car you know."

NASA uses whatever they deem is best to use. They are the leader in space for a good reason. Smile They are not too cheap to do anything. They have a budget which is allocated by the US Congress, and they have to work within the bounds of their resources in order to achieve what they have. Which is quite a lot if you compare it with what the rest of the world has done in space. Rolling Eyes

Every time? Twice in the last seventeen years with about one hundred very dangerous missions is perhaps not a bad record.

Iranian? I thought it was six Americans and an Isrealite that went up for the first time?
Conspiracy? I doubt that. When you are travelling at 12,500 miles per hour and you are heading from Texas to Florida, a couple thousand miles away, and will be landing in ten minutes or so... if something fails to function or the atmosphere has an unusual condition there is no second chance. There is not even time to correct anything that goes wrong.

Also realise that a shuttle once it hits the atmosphere it becomes a "glider" (more like a bloody brick if you ask me). So there's no way to change their mind, no way to do anything but sit and hope. Sitting and hoping does buggar all when the spit hits the fan.

It amused me a little though that the Whitehouse issued a statement to say that this was not down to a terrorist act...

1. How the hell could it have been?

2. Why not say the Iraqi's did it? Get a few more people convinced into attacking Saddam.

Yeah, and without us Yanks, you'd be the smallest island in the German Empire. Let's not get off into political ranting here. The Forum has transcended politics for years - let's not start squaring off now.

And for any of my friends in the UK who took offense at my opening statement, please understand that it is only a joke, and a rather poor one at that. I'm not going to get preachy or anything, but let's not turn the deaths of American astronauts into anything except for what it is - a tragedy for their families, the American people, and the world of science.

That poem is but one passage of a much longer poem
"For The Fallen" by Laurence Binyon.

That particular passage is used at the Returned Services Clubs in New Zealand and Australia to remember our fallen in war.
