Browsing around this site I got the feeling that I am not ready to join a real game yet. How on earth (any other planet is the same thing) do they reach the 25K limit by 2450?!?

I Would like to start a not too large game with some absolute newbies. My ideas: Agree on a race for all to play first, some discussion about moves outside the game, play up to a certain resource limit, then start something real.

The reason for this sandbox is, that I feel reluctant to invite Mentors / Tutors to my game: It can't be fun to watch such a cripple lose.

As to something real: In phase two I would like to invite mentors. I think it can be fun if they ally one on one with the beginners, playing a race with a few hundreds left over racial traits points, thus partially relying on their tutoring skills.

So:
I need 3 to 5 volunteers for torture and at an uncertain time in the future the same number +1 of experienced players. Would be nice to have some of the latter around while the sandbox is up in about a week or so.

Despite the general belief, it is possible to compare apples and oranges.

Fast enough growth rate is the prime trick.
Second thing is to have access to enough planet, so the pop can grow. Here the main trick is to have IFE and Privateers with 3 fuel pods, that way you can travel 3 years at W9. Pop will waste less time in space and enough planets are in reach even with 1 in 10 hab.

There are several "how-to"s, check the newsgroup and go for "jason cawley" articles like this:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.games.computer.stars /browse_thread/thread/b254385ac7d15c50/34eabd75c7d6b179?q=ja son+cawley+25K+how+to#34eabd75c7d6b179

Go for CA or JoaT, 19% growth, around 1in4 hab, 12/9/16 factories, 10/3/14-16 mines...

Keep planets at 33% for as long as possible, take IFE to export pop quickly, autobuild-Q factories first, then mines, then terraform.

Use an easy testbed first (small, packed, alone, max mins), you can pick harder ones later.

But for more detailed "how-to"s check the newsgroup.
If you still cant make it, dont hestitate to ask again - all of us have been in your situation once Very Happy

I still remember how frustrated I've been when trying to achieve that 25k goal with demo version of Stars!. There you couldn't design your own races, so I've been using "default" Humanoids and constantly getting 6.5k (+-10%) res at 2450. When I got the real Stars! I just checked the AccBBS on the Advanced game screen, and hit about 20k res with the same race!

Just that little check advances your race 7-8 turns further in time, but for Humanoids with only 15% PGR that means 10 turns. So don't forget to check it when doing your next testbed.

This is just too silly. AccBBS is some kind of standard for everyone?

My post was not about the 25K limit, by the way, but about getting a game together.

Without BBS your initial ~50rsc have to double over 9 times (once in 5.5 years), with BBS less than 8 times (once in 6.3 years). (Assuming exponential growth; The actual growth is faster than exponential by the way, as long as there are planets available with less than 25% pop and you plan on building factories).

However, I did the math and am planning on starting a thread on how I see it, after I read what others have contributed. There is some simple truth to tell about optimising doubling times.

Just a nice word to close this thread as far as the discussion is concerned: From all that I have seen in various posts, I think this is a very friendly and helpfull community, able to make a dangerous addiction like stars! even more lethal.
