I'm a definite Stars! beginner - I played a couple of MP games several years ago, and haven't touched the game at all since. Then a few days ago someone else was talking about the game, so I thought I'd pick it up again.

So basically what I'm asking is is there any such thing as a 'beginners game' any more? Or has the community shrunk and matured enough that the only players left are veterans? I'd love to get back into the MP side of Stars!, but if I'm just going to get massacred in every game I play I probably won't bother.

There's still quite a few beginners around - I just helped introduce one to the game not long ago. I think part of the problem is that many beginners don't know yet how to find lots of people to play with. Smile

Simly take a look at some of the recent posts - i.e. 'What is the best PRT?'

Beginners still exist. Cool

I am willing to create and host a beginner game, and be a non playing entity and monitor, of and in the game, if there are enough beginners that need and want a multi-player game to play in.

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.

Ooooh! How do you define beginners?

I may be interested...

Currently playing in only my second MP game.. but have clocked up a stupid amount of AI time...

What can I say? There's nothing on the TV these days... Rolling Eyes

I'd pretty much clasify anybody who has never played Stars! in a multi player game, or has only played in one or two, to be a beginner. There are a few exceptions, but, that is the general rule.

The AI is good for learning how to play the game - as an adversary it is woefully inadequate though fun to stomp on every now and then Hit over head Grin

Yesss.... I've already noticed the difference between the good ol' AI players and real live human beans (how I long to see those foolish Valadiacs once again...).

But at least the Nees and the Hawks don't go bitchin' behind your back... Rolling Eyes

Also, despite great reports concerning the JOAT race, I got my JOAT butt well and truly kicked from one end of the galaxy to the other (not technically correct - my butt was repeatedly kicked in an increasingly diminutive and confined space).

I'd like to think I could throw a better race together now.
I no longer use the "Mr. Potato Head" method for race creation. Very Happy

Someone (I can't remember who) put together a "random race generator" a while back - you could try that instead Laughing

Ashlyn hosts beginner games every now and then, and I've hosted a couple and may do another one at some point. My criteria for "beginner" was something like "never won a game against human opposition".

There have also been a couple of "mentored" games where beginners are teamed-up with more advanced players.

I'll try and keep an eye out for one of these....

My excitement is almost tangible... Smile

Well, at least I feel very existent and I have never left the single player arena yet. I can crush the AI, but don't know what that is worth. Would appreciate someone introducing me to a multiplayer game indeed.

There is a mentor-program, check the newsgroup.
If you want to join any multiplayer game, I could have a look over your shoulder and give some tips about race design, tactics etc.

Playing vs. humans is indeed very different from fighting AIs.
It is _much_harder but also _much_more fun Very Happy

Feel free to join any beginner game and contact me for questions on how to start.

Razz

Robert
