It isn't necessary to list all possible cheats when using JRC4. The pop steal cheat has been tested not to work anymore - I hosted one of the JRC4 beta test games long ago and helped test the JRC4 release.
The minefield travel cheat (NS or EW for speed bumps) should still be listed even though JRC4 supposedly did 'fix it'. However, it has been found after the JRC4 release that if the enemy is SD, the cheat is still very effective. This was overlooked in the testing of JRC4. as a side note, it is so very easy to see someone using this cheat.
Split fleet dodge - this is always a conundrum since every player merges and splits fleets multiple times in a given turn, and only in very specific circumstances can see a direct attack coming against a specific fleet. In general, I usually ignore this as a possible cheat and, when attacking I adjust for the possibility of the target fleet splitting by assigning specific orders to parts of my attacking fleet. I then split/merge my attacking fleet(s) to reflect those orders. If the target fleet does not split, I get close enough to the same result that I would have had from not 'thinking' about the the split fleet possibility that any difference is negligable- I have tested it.
Anything that intentionally overloads Stars! processing capabilities is a cheat (battle board, drop down display overlaoding , blah, blah, blah etc.). They are all listed, and Chaff is not a cheat witout overloading the battle board.
Therefore, there should be no problems in this game and I will look for a team member - I would like to play this one. - I have a couple potential players in mind.
Since I am an expert, I always handicap myself with my race design - no point in playing if it isn't a challenge. For this game I will ask some select intermediates I know, and select one that has the time - and will, to play as a team so they can learn more (AND, so we can WIN, WIN, WIN )

If all of them say "no", I'd love the opportunity to learn from an expert.

Just a small note here on the 'cheap starbase' bug.
I've been doing some testing and from my results with JRC4 this bug was fixed. If anyone can provide files where it does work I would be interested in seeing them since I hate cheats and would like to look for a way to detect someone using this one, if it is actually working. There is a small possibility that it may work in 2.7 retail versions but not the 2.6 versions. Certainly it is good to ban it as a cheat but I'm not sure that anyone can exploit it anyway. One less headache for us all I hope.

Snake Chomp,
PBEM = Play By E-Mail - though when using Autohost only half of the game is usually done nowadays by e-mail - i.e. the recieved turn files. Us folks in the Stars! community owe a great deal of thanks to Ron for creating Autohost and maintaining it. Many Stars! sites have come and gone over the years but Autohost has always been here for us since it was created - a rock of stability in an otherwise uncertain world.
Way back before Autohost, games were defined and found mainly through the newsgroup - rec.computer.games.stars - one person would host a game and everyone would e-mail their turns to that person. The host would generate the new turn and e-mail the turn files to the players. During those days it was common to define that the turn files had to sent as mime encrypted for successful transfer (i.e. mime is the most common form of e-mail file compression for attachments). I hosted several games this way before Autohost. For the host, taking care of the game is a lot of committment - Autohost has made it much, much easier for game hosts.
Keep in mind, Stars! as a game was written for Windows 3.1 - It is STILL an old Windows 3.1 game and will run just fine on a 32Mhz or slower 386 or 486 processor computer. I would venture to say that it is the ONLY Windows 3.1 game currently very actively played on computers using Windows XP. This is how great the game is. It's kind of like chess on an intergalactic scale.
If Staz doesn't take me up on my offer to be my team mate then I will happily be your team mate - but Staz has first option since his message was posted first. If you want to create a team to play in this game but don't have any potential team mate you can think of, I'm willing to send a mail to several very good players I know and see if they are willing to play in this game with you.

My main concern of you two teaming up is that general opinion seems to rate you as an advanced player Staz.
|
I'll take that as a major compliment, but it's probably unwarranted. I have completed exactly two PBEM games in my life, one beginner level and one intermediate. And although I was declared a winner in one of them, I was actually getting my arse handed to me on a plate by another player (wierd situation, don't ask).
If there is a perception of me being an advanced player it is probably just because I've been a bit opinionated in this forum, and I've been working on some utilities that required me to get to know the guts a little better than most.
I'm happy to withdraw and Ptolemy can pick someone else, but there's no way I would even consider taking on the "expert" role in a partnership like this.

I have no problem dealing with the 100 point handicap.
I have to agree with Staz here though - after 2 games being considered an advanced player is a little presumptious on the part of those doing the considering. Look at Multilis for example - he also has played 2 multi-player games and been declared the winner in both (though neither game really properly finished). I'll grant you he has excellent mathematical abilities but he has only every played one PRT - HE. So, I wouldn't consider him advanced either.
Either way is OK with me though. I could go ahead and team up with SnakeChomp or Hillel if being in a team with Staz would create a problem. They have both expressed interest in playing this one.

Well I do try to do some at least basic vetting of players for my games if possible and that was the feedback I recieved. Personaly I don't use the AH formusI've not been an active poster about the game stars!since the days RGCS was the main forum. if you have only won one game then yes it would be excessive to class you as an advanced player so if you wish to team up with Ptolemy then I would not object.

So far it looks like roughly two thirds of the teams within the game will consist of two intermediate players.

I'd love the opportunity to learn from an advanced player, if anyone would have me. Strong on economy and grand strategy, but weaker on tactical play.
