Hi
Just swapped to a new Windows XP PC.
While playing Stars I find the Stars start-up screen appears from time to time, as far as I can tell at random. It sits over the game I am playing and the only way out is to hit the Stars exit button which closes the new box and the game I am playing. Unless I have just saved any actions I have taken are lost.
Anyone else come across this? Is there a solution?

How do you open your turn? By double-clicking on it (file type associated with Stars!) or do you first open Stars! and from there the game? Could be that using the second method the welcome screen suddenly gets to the foreground ... Confused

Is it a second version of Stars!? I mean does it show two versions running in the task manager?

Is the only option hitting the Exit button? What if you say continue or open game?

I've come across something like this before. I too have recently upgraded to XP and have started noticing anomalies in the interface. I get the tech drop down menu and strange long thin button-like bars that don't disappear or do anything. I've not had the Stars! intro screen but I assume it's the same problem.
Speculating from a programmers point of view, i'd say these things appear when you try to exit a stars! in game "window" (like the ship designer or tech browser) in a way that previous versions of windows would have prevented. The "illegal" exit doesn't clear up all the componants which stay on the interface until you exit the whole program. I couldn't say why stars! brings up the intro screen in your case though.

I guess the easiest way of solving this is to have a dual boot system and use 95/98/Me to play stars. A pain in the ass, but thats Microsoft for you. Hit Computer Wall Bash

I've seen this on most versions of Windows, and also on Linux using WINE. Stragely enough I've never seen it on XP, but then I haven't used it on XP much.

I use Windows XP on all my Machines and have no problems with Stars!

It may be a configuration issue sure, and may be related to the version of the OS being newer. However I would say that the OS is not that main cause, but somthing else.

What though, I don't know. Like I say, I haven't had any problems...

Things to just try in general (May or may not have any effect):

Clean the computer of any Spy or Adware.
Set the Stars.exe on Compatibility Mode
Close other program that are running while you play Stars

Those things are just things to try, no telling what even the cause is at this point, unless someone is familiar with the problem.

Hope you do figure it out!

Edit:
I just noticed the name of the thread.. This second window loading.. Its a different VERSION or stars? Hmmm, my first thing to do would to try deleting or moving to another directory any other versions of stars. You only need 1.. SAH has a backup of amny older versions (uless they got lost when it moved).

I think with second version argusfreak didn't mean a different version, just a second time it opens. Hence my question if it was really a second Stars! (in the taskmanager) or possibly the same Stars! in which he was playing his turn that made the startup screen appear for some odd reason ...
