Some of you may have seen this tool we are working on mentioned on rgcs. I just posted this announcement on rgcs:

Quote:

There is now an improved version of the hab range and econ tool at http://home20.inet.tele.dk/craebild/hab_range_tool/habcalc.h tml

Some of the news are:

The number of planets used for the calculations is now selectable, with options ranging between 250 planets and 50.000 planets. Calculating for 50.000 planets takes a little while, but that number of planets almost eliminates the statistical variation.

There are now two options for the width of the graph, so people with low screen resolutions can fit the entire graph within their window.

The resolution of the graph can be selected at 1, 2 or 4 pixel per vertical bar. Selecting a better resolution will only slow down the calculation noticeably when calculating for a small number of planets.

Please take a look at it, and post your opinions and suggestions here.

Hi!
A really nice work. I'd just add a comment and a wish.
- Reading the code it looks like the tool does use "trapezoidal" hab distribution for grav and temp, but it uses it like first and last five "clicks" happen less often. In game it is 10 "clicks", so IMO the line 134 should use 80 instead 90 and 19 instead of 9.
- Could you add a shift-click (or right-click...) to buttons that move hab, to move/change width by 10 "clicks"?
BR, Iztok

As far as I can tell the formula is correct, it gives equal probability for values 10-90, with the probability of values 1-9 and 91-99 dropping linearly when moving away from center (and zero probability for 0 and 100).

That sounds like a good idea, we will implement that. However, that might not be supported in older browsers.

Edit: Shift-click for 10 clicks worth of narrowing, widening or moving has now been implemented.

Hello? Is this thing working?

Ahem,

Hi everybody,

I remember having the same doubt about the trapezoidal distribution of random points the first time I read the code. I built a testing function for it which to my amazement showed things worked exactly as advertised. Surprised

I still have the code somewhere, stuck in one of my early prereleases of the "improved" hab tool.

Now that C.Raebild has nailed the finer points in the random generator, we can be fully confident that our predictions are close enough to Stars! actual operation to base our calculations in them.

Still, nothing can beat a good tesbed, unless we learn to simulate gameplay, too. Smile

Cheers & C U @ the Battleboard!

Ohe! Not so fast, my friend. We need your input! Cool

What kind of graph/calculator/gizmo would be better to help people figure out the worthyness of their racewizard designs?

Is there something we overlooked? Some glaring math error? Surprised

We also need some help with AR. What kind of figures would those extradimensional beings like to know?

Anyway, expect the "Generalized Research" simulator up soon. But after that... Confused

The hab range and econ tool at http://home20.inet.tele.dk/craebild/hab_range_tool/habcalc.h tml has seen further improvements, the latest addition is the option to calculate the theoretical hab results, instead of basing the result on a handful of randomly generated planets (well, up to 50000 planets).

It takes a little longer in Mozilla and Opera (it is faster than the higher planet counts in IE, as IE does not handle large arrays very well), but it might be worth the wait for the greater accuracy.

Please take a look at it, and post your opinions and suggestions here.
