Standard no pre-game alliance Game with following rule:

All NAP, Tech Trading, and Alliance agreements must have the following clause:

"Notwithstanding any other clause, this agreement may be terminated on notice via the game messaging" i.e. a player may attack another on the same turn notice of termination is given via the game messaging.

We should create some interesting tensions between the benefits of alliance versus security.

Why not? There is almost always one in every game who plays this way anyway, IOW they never agree to agreements and manage to catch me with my attention focused elsewhere.

No agreements and I have no recourse other than to suck it up and try to recover from the attack. You would think that I would learn - but NO ...

Other than the clause rule, there is not much difference between this and "last man standing" victory conditions anyways. Except for the paranoia level, of course. I'm already in such a game, so unless this one takes a while to take off, I'll be busy. But I think it is a wonderful idea.

It really needs a more politically-correct name, however. We can't have a game named "Backstabber". We need to manipulate the language a little bit. I can't think of anything right now, but I'm sure there is some genius out there just dying to come up with the perfect title.

The game was among friends. I was playing an AR...I started in the middle of the map, and was trying to be friendly with everyone, feeling pretty vulnerable. A long time gamer buddy and co-worker was to my NE. Our normal procedure was to multi gen till someone decided they need to go to war, or needed more MM. Anyway, the unwritten, gentlemens agreement for speeding up game was don't Pearl Harbor someone on a multigen...ask for single turn gens, first.

<shrug> I opened up my next turn, of a 3 turn gen, and noticed that 2/3 of my empire was gone, including my HW and most of my miners. I actually thought it was done quite well. Totally eliminated me from being a power, but didn't quite put me out of the game, I decided to give others free minerals off their homeworlds from that point on.

I'll never set him to "freind" again, in any situation, including a "team" game. From that day forward, I took the attitude of "You get one chance".
