-Nova. Any/all fleets and orbital installations are destroyed; ground installations unaffected (single system)

In RL, a Nova will destroy all life and installations an any habitable planet in the system.

In RL, ships can't travel faster than the speed of light. It's just a game. I thought "Nova" sounded cooler than my original idea of Space Herpes decimating the crews of all ships and orbital installations, causing them to crash into one another in their death throes.

Or maybe my original idea was better.

Actually, ships can't accelerate to the speed of light or faster than the speed of light. However, there are a number of proposed theories that are perfectly scientifically sound that can get past this:

The current theories work much like an escalator (moving staircase) or a moving walk at an airport. Under normal circumstances, you can't move faster than a certain speed, and even then you age slower than the universe around you the faster you go. However, if you can bend space itself in accordance with Einstein's theories of relativity (in just the right way) you can make space "carry" you places. If you were still or barely moving relative to the space around you while this is going on, relativity would not cause the time dilation involved in acceleration to near light speeds, and your position relative to where you were would be different, and you could potentially "carry" yourself much faster than you could normally accelerate at the same time.

Ha! I knew that the universe revolved around me! Wait 'til I tell my boss that one!
