I have an OLD copy of Stars (2.5!) on floppy and am just getting back into the game. I'd like to move my 2.5 up to the current 2.6, but I cannot find a clean copy of the zip file to take me from 2.5a to 2.6b.

Any recommendations? The files at http://library.southern.edu/stars/stars.htm and the mirror are both corrupt according to every unzip program I could find.

The current 2.6 is *j*, you do not need to patch all the way, the 2.6jRC3 exe is the complete game.
Unless you want the *b* version ... that patch seems to be corrupt indeed ...

Did 2.6 stop the registration process, or will the new executable be able to detect my registration key from 2.5?

Thanks again for the answers!

I don't know if your registration key will work with the latest version. Also at some point illegal keys were banned from the game and if I understood correctly some legal keys were banned as well ...

To be sure, you need stars26jrc3 if you want to play in AutoHost games.

IIRC, the legal keys that were banned by mistake in one patch (I do not rememeber which) will work in the JRC3 patch.

How odd... is that the only one corrupted? I wonder if I accidently used ascii mode instead of binary when transfering it years ago? Never heard of any problems until now though.

Probably because no one had needed it... Smile

No, that does not seem to be the problem, it is in 8 bit format.

The tail end of the file does not look correct, though, so the transmission must have been cut off when you uploaded it, or a HD problem on the server caused part of the file to disappear.

No, they're looking for the 2.5a->2.6b patch.

I did a little searching. Altavista found a site with a copy that may be intact, the site is here: http://www.hibbard.force9.co.uk/freeware/patch/

It is a self extracting file build with pkzip, and it unpacks without errors. Zipping the contents with WinZip set to zero compression results in a 814 KB zip file, so the size looks to be OK, too.

I don't have a Stars! version 2.5a or older, so I cannot check if the patch actually works.
