Whew!
Well, I now definetly know how this forum saves messages!
The message corruption happened when I manually edited the large text file that contains all message posts, and changed 3 occurances of 'library2.southern.edu' to 'library.southern.edu'
This caused a 3-byte offset in many messages. To compound the problem, I had run 'consistancy checker' before I noticed the problem, which caused the first 3 bytes of many messages to be overwritten with garbage.
I had to go through every line in the message file (10000), find the thread that went with it on the forum and check for corruption, fixing as I went along.
If I was unable to guess the correct first 3 bytes of a message, I changed it to 'ZZZ' You'll find lots of 'ZZZ' at the beginning of many messages. I encourage the authors of those posts to 'edit' their messages.
Several posts in the Academy forum will not be easily understood until this is done!
If anyone notices any visible HTML code in a message, please let me know, or if you are the author of such a message, use the 'edit' function to fix it yourself if you can.
I'm sorry it took so long to get the forum back up again. (and yes, I will definetly do a backup before such a 'minor' change again )
Hopefully, this 6 day delay hasn't killed Home World Forum.
Ron Miller
