Hi!
I am in my second game of stars! and loving it. I have the urge to host a game. How does one go about this? How do I become a host? I know I need to talk to Ron about setting up a game, but what else is involved?
Also, is there interest for a game where the only race restriction is that every race must have 500 advantage points leftover? I thought this might bring about some interesting race designs, but may result in slower versions of the same old same old.
I would like to host a game with anywhere from 8-12 good players in a medium universe. Whether or not I do the 500 point thing will depend on the response. I would play as an observer race, documenting the game. I also plan to put a ~120 turn cap on the game, with public player scores 10 years before the end. (ala RWIABII, in which I played) Pending response to this post, I will get the details out and start seeking players.
Cheers!

All you really need to do is post an announcement. I would suggest that you kick the idea around in the bar first to see if there is any interest, but it's not really necessary.
When you post the announcement, try and get as much nailed down as possible. Check out the hosting forum for more suggestions.
Once you have all your players (complete with race files, passwords, etc) you can then create the game and send it all to Ron, who will set it up on Autohost when he gets a chance. Remember though that he has a real job which takes priority over autohost stuff so it could take a few days.
If you are unsure about something just ask though; there are plenty of people who are happy to help new hosts. I got a load of help from Ashlyn my first time which was a god-send (thanks again Ashlyn).

I just set up my first game, and even though I had a slightly rocky start, it's not that hard. The best advice I can give is to go to some of the other new game postings and be sure to include everything they did. I found a couple games that laid out the settings and rules and just copied what they had done. If your initial post is complete enough, you won't have to answer alot of questions just to get the game going.
And here's an idea I missed, that it seems many hosts aren't very specific on - valid criteria for re-gens or for "Hold" periods. You have to be flexible, but you don't want your game to go on hold every week, either. It'd be nice if there were some standard clauses hosts could use.
Hey, for a similar game idea, go under New Games and look for The Dark Ages 3.
Hope this helps!
