Hi People,

Have you noticed that there is a lot of junk in the newsgroup lately?

Last week, 1 spam, 1 on topic.
Previous week 2 spam, 1 joke, 1 on topic.
Previous week 4 spam.

before that it was normal... has the newsgroup moved?

It sure makes this forum much more valuable.

No, it has just fallen out of favor, it seems. Although, lucky for us, Mark still posts there.

My theory of the day-

Crisium's site is dead, and that was the main link that Newbies used to get to the NG. Newbies ask the most questions... So, I'd presume that since the major influx of Stars! related questions have dispated, so has the the NG (I'm sure other still visit, just don't post). Plus, it is now summer in the US, and that is always a slowdown period.

Yes, plus Ron monitors and blocks idiots. Huge bonus. In fact, my only gripe about this forum is actually software related. I really hate forums, since they are a not threaded. However, I tolerate it because the quality of the participants makes it bearable. In many other non threaded forums, following a particular argument can be difficult at times.

Regarding threaded vs. flat views, have you tried clicking on the Tree View button? Since most of us are using Flat View, this threaded view is probably not going to do what you want, but I wondered if you had noticed the option.

Yes. The big problem is no seperate window for the selected thread's text. Not having the ability to colapse a thread. The page generation time between request of an item in a thread, and it being displayed (Well, we aren't downloading the messages...). I'd really prefer to download the messages, and manipulate them quickly.

Personally, I don't mind just plain text, and would be happy if this was just a moderated NG. I have looked at other forum software, and there are no gems. This is as good as it gets, as far as I know.

Gotta agree with your gripes about web forums - NNTP is a lot nicer for this sort of thing, even if it doesn't allow the same level of control.

Oh well, those who forget the past are forced to reimplement it badly. Wink

Of course someone could suggest to the developers that they implement passworded NNTP access...but Ron may not want to enable that...quite possibly it might interfere with other library activities. Cool
