[I posted this here since Ron might not get an official announcement out for a few hours.]
I'm the host of a few games and just received an email warning me about possible cheating in one of the my games. This was from -> Ron Miller Autohost@hotmail.com <-.
The text was a very convincing replica of what most messages from Ron look like (and is probably based on one.

Hello,
As part of a serial number scan on games running on Stars! AutoHost, I have detected two players in your game which are using the same serial number and computer to upload turns to AutoHost. The players in question are player 6 and player 9. If this is expected, please forgive the intrusion. However, if players playing multiple races is not permitted in your game, you may want to take action.
Thank you.

A comparison of the message headers with some other examples indicate that one of the cheaters from the Summer game are continuing attempts to disrupt games.

Got one too.
Hope this guy meets the business end of a Hells Angels motorcycle gang.

Actually at the moment, I'm only digitally signing important posts I make on the RGCS newsgroup.
As for checking the digital signature, install the free PGP-international version from
http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/
(if outside the US)
or free version (for inside the US) from
http://www.pgp.com/products/freeware.html
Not sure if you'll actually *have* to create your own set of private/public keys or not just to check digital signatures.
Grab my public key from
http://starsautohost.org/stars/public_key.asc
and add it to your public keyring.
Then when you want to verify that a digitally signed message is from me, copy the exact message into your clipboard, and use the PGP verify/decrypt (clipboard) option.
(Edit: Mar. 15, 2011 I'm now using GPG4WIN, and have generated a new key pair. The public_key.asc file listed above contains my new public key.

If you do install PGP I recommend installing GPG rather that PGP - They're both on the PGPI page.
The difference is that GPG comes with plugins for email programs that you would only get with the paid version of PGP.
You don't need them...but they make it so much easier to use.

Well, there actually has been a player cheating by playing A) multiple races and B)setting up games as non playing host requiring player passwords and also playing in the game under a different address. Thankfully, Ron is able to scan for serial number usage.
The culprit is (was?) here in the forums as (censored by Ron until Ron posts a message about it.) and has been caught in a couple games. I suspect that this hotmail message may be his pathetic little attempt to disrupt the Stars! community after his embarrassment from being found out.

Ron, you are saying that the person Ptolemy is referring to (named X) isn't Greg.
But it was Greg that posted the hotmail message.
Ergo, person X didn't post the hotmail message.

Correct. Person X didn't post the hotmail message referenced in the first post in this thread.
