I notice quite a few players play the parts of their races fairly well. The first PBEM game I was in had a race with a name that was complete binary, as was all of their ship designs and in-game messages. Of course, this made communication of any kind impossible, but you have to admire that commitment to characterization.

I've been getting into this a little more recently, although usually I like to base my races on a funny idea.

Example: I'm currently playing a game where my race is known as "The Verbs". All of my ship designs and in-game messages are entirely composed of verbs. As you can imagine this is very difficult, but I think I'm managing okay so far.

Anyone else have (or had) a particularly interesting role-playing race?

I love the role-playing aspect of Stars! Role-playing can either hinder or help ones diplomatic/strategic play.

For example, in a recent game I played a HP/HE IS that needed a lot of ramp up time to be successful. I played the race as biologically xenophobic. I was very respectful of other races, but absolutely would not let them in to my territory. The reason for this was to keep them from realizing that I had colonized every planet in my relatively small area. Good role playing, and an unreasonable tenacity, helped me win that game.

OTOH, I'm currently in a game, as a replacement player, where I decided for no apparent reason that the Kotosians are a race of poets. So all of my communication is done in poem form. What a pain in the butt! This is a lot of work and still makes diplomacy problematic. Oh well.

And I thought writing in only verbs is difficult.

The amount of role-playing I do is variable. Tends to remain relatively light and will diminish somewhat as the MM requirements of the game increase.

I do tend to "theme" name my ships based upon my race.

And in some of the longer team games I've developed my race viewpoint further and generated news reports after particularly amusing events. (Some of these make it into post-game histories as well.)

[Someone even caught on to what I was paraphrasing when Grand Admiral Kang of the Affronters openned a post-battle message to the team with "It was glorious."]

My recent endeavors have been a bit lack luster however. The Watcher commentary for the RWIAB games sort of dried up due to other commitments and my game reviews for those are a bit dry in my opinion as well. (The 2450 'Haiku' Watcher News for the one game excepted in my opinion. Wink )

So far the only role-playing I've done is a sort of generic oily diplomat, which is fun admittedly, but as soon as the other player drops their RPing so do I. Being pompously unctuous can get tiring after a while, and it takes too much time composing flowery speeches. heh

I try to design races and names consistent with percieved racial traits and play the races consistent with those values. Grin

I consider myself a Tolkien fan fromway before the movie so my impression of IS is akin to elves Very Happy . Proud Peacefull (No Smart Bombs) Smile people who live long and Defensively (Planetary Defences + Better defending) Smile And can shoot very fast with a bow and arrow (That cute litl gatling gun) Twisted Evil

There is probably a few more comparisons I can make but I forget Rolling Eyes

A few more comparisons

SS : Hobbits (Ever hear a hobbit? They are notoriously silent and small)
WM : Orcs (Don't you just hate them?)
IT : Ents (Those things take interstellar steps)
SD : Dwarves (How else do you think they dig so deep)
JOAT : Humans (Duhhh!)
AR : Eagles (Live high up in the montaina in Aireis)
HE : Goblins (Ever seen ONLY one million of them)
CA and PP : no Idea but they are there someware.

I've played Hobbits a couple times Sneaky

I would think Elves would need to have a slow growth rate to fit the Tolkin theme.

Dwarves should have incredible mining ability.

PP: Giants (They throw big things at people) Hit over head
CA: Wraiths? (Do they really care just how much gravity there is?)

The wraiths are a stretch, but I can't think of any other races that haven't been used yet for CA.

AR: The Rohan?
They hole up in Helm's Deep and their survival depends on its staying up . . .
Oh, also, the Rohan live up off the ground (in hills Razz).

And, of course, the Rohan are notorius for mining their own land and being invulnerable to gigantic projectiles flung from space. Well actually, I kind of made those last ones up.

Yes, I almost invariably fall into some state of role-playing when I am in a PBEM game of Stars! I just can't seem to help it. It depends on the race I am playing, in other words whole race design figures into the role I play. That doesn't necessarily mean that a WM will be super-aggressive and actively belligerent either. A WM would most likely be cordial and accomodating, but only up to a point. You would not want to try saber-rattling on my WM role.

My most favorite game ever was one that was hosted by me, coincidently, and was called the Battle of Frostbite Falls. It seems I've posted this in another thread somewhere, but I'm old so I'm entitled to repeat myself.

I was the Dorights, a bunch of friendly but hyperactive SD critters who hadn't quite figured out that they were supposed to be a defensive race. I managed to get so involved with this particular game that I started posting a news periodical on a semi-regular basis giving updates on the massive trans-galactic war taking place as well as news of local interest. It was a lot of fun, and I believe the others enjoyed reading my nonsense. Of course, that could just be a big load of conceit on my part. Trash

The nice thing that I like about role-playing is that it helps with getting the diplomacy thing just right. If events are not going along to my liking, I can always have a coup or some such power shift take place within whatever government I'm running, which helps instigate things like diplomatic relations breakdowns. This allows me to break off treaties and such in an honorable, non-backstabbing sort of way. It gives my former allies time to adjust their thinking and get prepared for war with me, should I have a need for such drastic actions.

The Crusader Angel

Nothing for now.
