Hey everybody! I just found this forum from a link at starbase delta, which appears to be slowly dropping off the map.

I started work on a utility app about 2 years ago, and just got back into it. I found an old stars installer while cleaning up my computer, and just like the old days, 4 hours just disappeared into a vortex. Now i just need to find my serial# in 2 year old email somewhere!

Anyway, the data that i need is .xy .pla and .fle exports from stars. preferrably, .pla and .fle's from every year. I know some of you are probably doing that to load them into excel or something. My app (even in beta form!) works pretty slick:

1) you create a new "project" from a .xy file
2) you import .pla and .fle's after every turn (or every 5, or whatever)
3) it can show lots of info in charts and on the map about territories, populations, values, etc, and has a time "scrubber", that you can press play and watch the universe change, and scrub back and forth in time.

I cant find my old data that i used to test with, so i ran an 75 year game yesterday against the computer, but only exported every 5 years.

If anyone is interested in using it or giving me data, etc, let me know.

I'm probably going to reconstruct the website for it tonight, then i'll post a link to it with pics and such.

Thanks much!

j

I would suggest using the .pn and .fn files. You get these by modifying your Stars!.ini file, and adding NewReports=1 to your [Misc] section. They contain a lot more data, and for people who are dumping report files, this is what they normally use. You can also use command line to dump files and exit, I have a .bat file that does this. The syntax to dump both the .f and .p files is: stars!.exe -dfp -p password game.m1

Yeah, i hooked up the stuff last night to handle the pxx format as well. As it turns out, the last time i did any work on the app was 7/17/2001! I didn't even know about the advanced export until reading through the .m and .h disassembly thread discussion yesterday.

I currently don't have any fleet stuff added, but will probably do that this weekend.

Hopefully this weekend i'll have stuff packaged up in a way that i can distribute it easy. Do most of ya'll have java already installed somewhere? then i can just distribute a jar and some instructions...

I also have to set up some kind of system for bug/feature tracking too. I haven't distributed it yet because i know that as soon as a few people have it, the feature list will come POURING in Smile

Anyone is free to link to my site, i'd prefer to not have people mirror stuff, as then i can't control out of date versions, etc. The site is pretty stable, i run some rather large sites there (http://pk.trophyhunteronline.com/ gets about 500k hits a month all by itself, and thats just one of like 5 sites i'm hosting), so i'm not worried about traffic there.

I might have to register another domain name though!

Hmm... The polygon type territory map seems.... Less accurate than the population based map Xtreme Boarders uses.. Seeing as, a remote colony will stretch the polygon over a lot of space you don't own.. Where as the other will just make a little blob of some size around the remote colony.

But the multi year data is really quite nice.. Also be kinda nice to track fleets over time.. But.. I dunno how well that'd work out.
A fleet + Planet view that can handel multiple player data streams would be a very nice thing indeed. Smile

(Now if it just let you share ship designs and attempted to solve for ships present in fleets via mass and what not. Smile , not 100% but it could at least give a few guesses as to what it thinks is there.)

I do like the happy race labels there though Smile

the territory polygon map isn't the only option there. Its pretty easy to add other shapes, so i'm doing stuff right now to show outlines of where your gates reach, and a view where you can see possible gate routes, etc.

I'm working on getting the map to be completely stable and such, the version i have now has some goofy issues with zooming and scrolling, as soon as i have that part cleaned up, i'll make it available.

I don't have fleet stuff in yet either, but thats because 3 years ago there was no way java could handle fleets, as its orders of magnitude more data than planets have.

i plan on spending all sat/sun working on it, so it should be available then.

On a slightly different note.. Since you've decoded the XY nicely.. And I only spent a limited time working with it (just enough to see how it worked mostly) I was wondering if you could answer a question for me:

Of the 4 bytes that make up each planet's coordinates, planet picture and name ID.. Being: 1st byte: X offset, 2nd Y offset, 3rd seems to be a bit masked mix, 4th name ID..

Could you explain the 3rd byte to me? Or point me to where I can find out? (I feel too lazy at the moment to do bit analysis on half a dozen bytes to figure it out on my own.) I just wanna know which 2 bits are related to the name of the planet. I think it's 1st and 2nd.. But.. I'm not sure.. Smile

I didn't decode the xy file, i'm making the player start a project using the exported .map file, which already has all that stuff done. Smile

much simpler for me!

And on a "release" note, i put up stuff for version 0.9 for download on my website.

http://www.stars-strategist.com/download.php

There are lots of little issues, but it works for the most part. I'd recommend that even if you are importing .pla or .px files into the app, that you still put them somewher else so that you can rebuild your projects. I'm going to add some autobackup stuff to the app, but haven't gotten to it yet.

I just realized that the version up there supports only 2.7's extended export. I didn't realize that one of the 2.6 versions i have has different export columns in the p1,etc files.

so i'll fix that tonight. not that anyone's using it anyway Smile
