Have you ever thought about the colonists in stars? You might assume that they're loosely based off actual human beings, but there are a few weird unexplained bits of their physiologies.
For instance:

- Inner-Strength races reproduce while travelling. Since the freighter's capacity increases every year, it's fair to assume that the new additions are babies. Humans take nine months to be born, so that fits within a year easily. Now, say you popdrop them on an enemy planet. The newborn babies now function as warriors and are equally effective as their older counterparts.

- 1 kT is equal to 100 colonists. That would mean the average colonist weighs about twenty-thousand pounds.

Anyone have anything else weird to add?

Assuming they are human or a rough equivalent did it occur to you that said colonist would require tools, seeds, initial food supplies, and whatever additional technology and equipment establishing a new colony requires?

If you want to dwell upon that level of detail then I'm sure lots of justifications can be brought up.

Then again, maybe most pop isn't human or human-like at all.

I suggest we will evolve into sentient rats when we start to space travel. In any case the colonists in Stars! are not (even remote)loosely based on human beings. That is logical. Humans are developing too long and acting crazy and childish until high age. Rat gains maturity during one year so you can use that "baby" as invasion trooper next year, no problem.

Lets check it with numbers ... there can live only about 1 million of pop on Stars! planet. In reality we see that there can coexist 6,000 times more human beings on planet Earth while still growing. Obviously the "colonist entity" should be more than just one "being".

If our population is about reasonable, then ... on one hand 1 "colonist" weights 10 tons, on other hand 1 "colonist" should be at least 6,000 "beings". That makes 1 "being" weights no more than 1.67 kilogrammes. OK for rat? Wink

There, now we can start referring to our civilians as rats in our pbem games and no one will know what we're talking about Razz

I much prefer the second option. I like them, but I certainly don't want to meet a 10 ton rat. Shocked

Colonist growth rates resemble raths more than humans. We humans are currently growing at about 2% a year, iirc, and this is more or less the highest growth rate ever for us... rats wouldn't have much difficulty maintaining 20% growth curves if you ask me.

Bah! *waves hand*

Lets assume people live 100 years, then drop dead. Lets assume the females can give birth from the age of 20 to the age of 60.

A 20%/year growth rate, is a ~15% growth rate per 9 months. Death rate is 1% for simplicities sake.

So lets assume that half the population is female, so 30% of the female population needs to be pregnant at one time. However only those in the age of 20-60 -> 40% of the female population can carry children.

This means 75% of all eligible females need to be pregnant at any time. Or, each female between the age of 20-60 needs to have a child every year...

See - trivial... Very Happy

I think I'll just Teleport UFO abduction away now...

Actually, lets go with rat theory. Or is it tribbles?

Then theres the fact that humans rarely get triplates while rats get abou 4 to 12 babys a time (The mortality rate for baby rats is high though) so the persentage females could be lower if most of them get say twins while if rats get a lot more than that, weeellll... I would'nt want to see a 10 TON rat getting 12 baby's bigger than most anamals on earth Shocked

Also, male rats occasionally eat their own young.

Don't think yourself so special, where do you think the Chronos legend in the Greek myths came from? And, there are still societies where it is considered an appropriate way to acquire the attributes of your enemy/friend.

Rats are also very hardy and adaptable. If they had the technology we humans do, they'd have an easy time with wide habitability ranges.
