So, I am switching to Linux. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy I thought that I could switch my game from the main computer to the back-up. But the back-up did not want to play along. So I am planning on using wine on my linux box and continuing my game there. However, is there anything that would stop the game from running/opening on the game's end? If I keep the same serial code when I reinstall the program, will the different OS cause the game to activate the anti-copy part?

Once you've got wine up and running there is no problem... however, changing over within say a day is highly questionable. I would suggest getting a second hard-drive and installing linux on it and the setting up a multi-boot system with both windows and linux for a while until you have your apps comfortably operating under wine.

There should not be a problem running the game under Wine on Linux.

Essentally copy protection is only checked for the current turn, so unless someone uses you serial on your windows box and you submit using that serial on your linux box, there should not be a problem.

However, If you are not familiar with the linux operating system, expecting to transform your os overnight to linux from windows would be a grievous expectation.

Agreed: But the original poster uses the phrase:

Hence I would assume he allready has a Linux box... Sherlock

And to be fair: Changing you computers OS is always a painful experience...

Thank you all for your responses... No worries now!

As a side note. I have figured out what my problem was with my backup box, at least what was wrong with the Stars program... (really it was me) Wall Bash It was the wrong patch. Embarassed Embarassed Stars works now.

Oh, that linux conversion is running into its bumps... Quite a boring story actually...

You sound like you might have given up on the linux conversion idea. Hold your horses for a second. Try installing mandrake and try Crossover office. I am almost sure that starts would work through it.

try it and let me know...
have fun....

No, I have not given up on the Linux idea... I am actually sitting next to my linux box... I have used wine to open stars and I'm working on getting a new monitor for it... (My old one just got fried!)

Use the wineinstall script that ships with wine located in the tools directory to install wine, then manually edit the "config" file in your .wine directory to set your windows drives, and in the [x11drv] section to change the "Managed" = yes and to set a desktop.
Mine looks like this:

; Allow the window manager to manage created windows
;"Managed" = "Y"
; Use a desktop window of 640x480 for Wine
"Desktop" = "942x707"

Set the desktop size for whatever works on your monitor and screen size, I set this to place a window slightly smaller than my screen area.

You may also need to change the [fonts] section to get the fonts to display correctly.

Is this correct? Setting "Managed" = "Turtle" is the same when it is commented out... Wink

I suppose "Managed" = "N" would work as well, but leaving it as "Managed" = "Y" lets the splash screen come up in front of the Serial Number block.
